A few days later, Grace woke Ben up in pain. “Ben! We have to go now. I think I’m in labor!” she yelled between contractions.
Ben bolted upright. Shit! She wasn’t supposed to go into labor. He grabbed his phone off the bedside table and dialed 911 to get an ambulance. Then he called Dr. McKinley to let her know.
As soon as they arrived at the hospital the on call Doctor hooked Grace up to an IV and began administering drugs that would make her labor stop and put her under. They were going to do an emergency C-section. He barely had time to give her a kiss and tell her he loved her before she was falling asleep and was whisked away into the operating room.
He called Nick after they took her. He arrived in record time with both Racheal and Emma in tow. Casey walked in a few minutes later. They all sat in the waiting room while Ben paced nervously back and forth.
“How long should it take! It shouldn’t be this long!”
Emma went to Ben and put her arm around his shoulder. “Try to relax Ben. Grace is gonna need your strength when she comes out. You have to be calm for her.”
Ben sat down and Emma rubbed his back to keep him calm.
A few minutes later, a nurse came into the waiting room. “Ben Murdock?”
Ben jumped up along with everyone else.
“Come with me. Your wife and baby are doing fine. She is still in surgery, but you can see your son.”
“They’re both okay?”
“Yes. The rest of you can walk around to the nursery viewing area and can see him there. We should have him in there in about 5 minutes. Have you decided on a name yet?”
“Yes. We are going to name him Coleman Ramsay,” replied Ben still in shock.

“Ben, meet your son, Coleman,” said the nurse. Ben just stared at the the baby in the bassinet, trying to let it sink in that this was his son. His friends watched through the window.
“He’s very healthy for just over 36 weeks. 5 lbs. 9 oz. and 19 inches long. Your wife did very well. Do you want to hold him?”
“I can? Yes. God yes,” said Ben, in awe of the tiny little baby. His baby, his son.
The nurse picked up the baby and handed him to Ben. He feel in love instantly.
He looked up and saw his friends standing on the other side of the glass. He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face as he turned so they could see his little boy. Life was almost perfect in that moment. All that was missing was his Grace.
He turned to the nurse, “When will my wife be out of surgery?”
“Let me check. It shouldn’t be long. They were putting in the final stitches last time I checked. They were able to save her uterus. We will take her to her room when she comes out of recovery. You can wait there for her. We will bring the baby in there as well. She can try to nurse him when she wakes up. We also have formula so you can feed him with a bottle.”
“Thank you,” he said as he looked lovingly at the little boy sleeping peacefully in his arms.

An hour later he was sitting in a familiar hospital room with his wife. They had wheeled Cole into the room with them. He was still sleeping so Ben sat on the edge of the bed needing to be close to Grace. He held her hand while she slept.
She began to stir so Ben got up and leaned over to her, never once letting go of her hand. “Hi Mommy,” he said grinning.
“Mommy?” she said and smiled.
“Yes. I have someone here you really need to meet,” said Ben, “He’s here in the room with us.”
Ben picked up the baby and laid him in her arms. He scooted close to Grace to help her hold him. “He’s better than okay. He’s perfect.”
