Chapter 36 – Family?

Author’s Note:  You may need these when you read this chapter…..

01-01-18_7-36-35 PMIt was 2:00 am and Ben slowly woke up to the sound of Cole’s crying. He looked over at Grace and the baby hadn’t woken her. She was sleeping soundly. He was extra careful not to wake her as he climbed out of bed to tend to his son.

01-01-18_7-46-44 PMBen happily fed and changed the baby. He rocked him for a few minutes until he was falling asleep then laid him back in his crib. He relished these quiet times, in the dark, alone with the baby. He still couldn’t believe this child was his and he had a family that loved him.

01-01-18_7-27-53 PMWhen he came back to bed and pulled the covers back, his heart stood still in his chest. There was blood all around Grace and she had a deathly pallor to her face. When his heart started again, it was racing out of his chest. “Grace! Wake up!” he screamed and shook her.

01-01-18_6-46-32 PM“Mmm….so…tired,” she managed to get out and closed her eyes again.

Shit. She’s going to be okay, she’s going to be okay, he repeated over and over in his head. “Stay with me baby!” he begged as he fumbled around the bedside table to get to his phone. Found it. “I’m calling an ambulance! Grace, stay with me.”

01-01-18_8-01-36 PMBen’s hands were shaking so much he could barely dial the three numbers he needed to get an ambulance. When he hung up he looked at Grace, tears now running down his face. “Grace…baby, they’re on the way. Hang on please.”

He called Emma next. His leg was bouncing up and down waiting for her to answer. “Answer the phone dammit!” he shouted on the second ring.

“Ben?” came the sleepy voice on the other end of the line.

“Get over here now. RIGHT NOW! It’s an emergency. The ambulance is on the way!” he shouted into the phone.

“What’s going on?”

“NOW!” he demanded and hung it up.

01-01-18_9-12-58 PMTwo minutes later, Emma walked in just as the paramedics had placed Grace on the stretcher. They were preparing to wheel her out to the waiting ambulance. It was all surreal to Ben. He couldn’t feel his body.

01-01-18_8-59-45 PM.pngHe didn’t realize Emma was there until she put her arms around him. Her hands were warm in contrast to Grace’s cold hands. He had tried hard to warm them before they put her on the gurney. Emma stayed with him until they were ready to leave. He knew she was talking to him, but he didn’t understand anything she said.  All he could think about was Grace.

01-03-18_6-29-57 PMWhen they got to the hospital a team was already waiting for her. With the questions Ben was able to answer in the ambulance they had determined she likely had a tear in her uterus which caused the hemorrhaging. The Doctor said they would have to perform an emergency hysterectomy. Ben signed the paperwork and they rushed her straight into the OR.

01-03-18_7-00-23 PMHe slumped into the waiting room chair in shock. He barely registered Rachael and Nick’s arrival.

Rachael sat down next to Ben.  Nick remained standing.  “Do you want some coffee Ben?” asked Nick.

01-03-18_7-29-37 PMBen just continued to stare off. “She’s never going to be able to have another baby. It’s going to kill her. I signed the paper….” he said flatly.

“I know,” said Rachael quietly, “But she has you to help her through it – and Cole.”

Ben hadn’t thought about Cole since he left with Grace in the ambulance.  The mention of his son’s name panicked him. “Cole…I should check on him…” said Ben standing up in a daze.

01-03-18_7-40-55 PM.pngNick grabbed him. “Ben, he’s fine. Listen to me. Emma and Casey are with him. Emma fusses over him so much, you would think she’s his mother. Now sit back down,” he said and guided him to his seat.

01-03-18_7-52-03 PMHe remembered that Emma had been there when they left with Grace. Her hands were warm. Ben put his head in his hands to drown out the quiet whispers of Rachael and Nick. All he could think about was how sad Grace was going to be. His heart was breaking for her. He would be fine with one child, but he knew Grace wanted more children. She envied his large family, having been an only child – with just her grandmother in her life.

He stood up again and began to pace, checking his watch. “Where are they? What’s taking so long?” he growled out.

01-03-18_7-59-38 PMNick got up and went to him “Shhhh. Ben, come sit back down before they make you leave.”

01-03-18_8-06-11 PMBen started to sob. “I can’t! Grace is being operated on again! She’s not going to be able to have any more children. She lost so much blood. She could have died.”

01-03-18_8-13-28 PMNick went to Ben and put his hands on face. “Look at me Ben. She didn’t. You were there and you got her here. It’s going to be okay. She’s getting taken care of. Now come sit back down. She’s going to need you in one piece.”

He knew Nick was right, but he couldn’t get the sight of her ashen skin or the blood out of his head. Reluctantly he did as Nick said and sat back down.

01-03-18_8-27-57 PMRacheal reached over and took his hands. She was being so sweet to him.  She was rarely nice to him. It was only because of Nick that she tolerated him. He knew he deserved it. But he was trying to be a better person. For Grace and for Cole – his family.

01-03-18_8-37-55 PM.pngAnother thirty minutes passed when finally the doctor came out, looking exhausted and grim. “Ben Murdock?”

Ben smiled relieved to see the doctor. “Yes! Can we see her now?”

The doctor looked back and forth between Ben, Nick and Rachael. “Is this your family?” he asked instead of answering Ben’s question.

Rachael gasped. “Oh God, no…”

01-03-18_9-11-20 PM.pngAt Rachael’s reaction Ben understood the implications of the doctors question. He felt a shiver run down his spine. He could hardly get a breath. Whatever he had to tell him, it wasn’t good.

Nick was quickly at Ben’s side holding him up. Ben finally managed a small nod.

01-03-18_9-13-34 PM“Everyone, follow me please,” said the doctor refusing to make eye contact.

  4. Nope.
    Nope.
    Nope.
Oh noooooooo!!!! Now Ben is just going back to being bitter about things and hating his family, besides having to raise his son ”alone” (”ao alone” becase he has his friends to help him in this area) I really wonder if he will be able to let himself love someone again, as it took quite a while for him accept Grace, and now that he lost Grace e might go all glommy like: ”Oh, the world dosen’t want me to find love” and stuff…

    • Not leaving it for long. In 24 hours we will find out what happened. Single Daddy Ben. He never planned to be a Daddy at all, much less a single one. 😏

  6. I didn’t cry. But it’s only because I’m too tired of spending too much time on my computer. I can’t imagine the damage it will do to Ben. Well, he thought he would be the one to hurt his loved ones…and the opposite happened. Now he certainly won’t be able to trust in love ever again. This is so harsh. The angel…….

  7. Oh crap. Now I’m glad I haven’t given up on my secret ship with Ben and Sophia. Although I didn’t expect Grace to be gone so soon. 😦 I thought the drug dealers would kill her. Poor sweet Grace. Goodbye.

  8. NOOOOOOOOO 😭😭😭
After the warning at the beginning I prepared myself for the worst but this was still so devastating. WHYYYYYYY?!!!!!! Things were just turning up, she was supposed to meet his family and… oh, no. Calling her an angel was too on the nose 💔 I do not want to see the aftermath just yet so I shall take a break from my binging.

  9. So Grace died.
Wonder if Ben is going to make a wish at the wishing well, get ambrosia, bring her back to life in Sims 4? Or will this be like real life having to go on? And there is still cannibus, and the family coming, what will Ben do?
Looks like I am going to have to read more chapters…..Good bye Grace. Wonder if you will hang around like a Sims 4 Ghost? Who else is going to keep Ben on the straight and narrow?
Thanks for the storyline so far and have a wonderful day.

    • 😦 I know…. So very, very sad. Nope… no ambrosia or wishing wells for Ben. He gets to deal with this like all of us do. I fell in love with Grace along with Ben. I shed a TON of tears writing these chapters. His family is coming to help. This may start his journey to forgiveness and trust….

  10. Oh ouch.
    This is like a korean drama show ; _ ;
and Ben was just starting to make progress.
And this is exactly what I was worried what might throw him back again.
Hopefully he’ll be strong enough for his son…

  11. OK, fine, I’ll be the a-hole – and typically blunt, as I am: need Emma’s address so I can put a hit on her b/f, and then finally I get my Emma+Ben thing. *evil laughter*.
Sorry Ben, but that girl just didn’t grow on me. Need me some Southern drawl.

  12. A cliffhanger! Good God I hope Ben’s beautiful wife will be ok. He needs to compose himself but that’s got to be near impossible when you are waiting on the edge of your seat to see if the love of your life is ok. Once again, great job Audrey! Story just gets better and better. 😊

  13. Wow, I… am speechless. I admit only taking a VERY quick look at the pictures, didn’t read the words at all. Thank you so much for the warning! It will take some time stomaching this 😞 Though the circumstances are different, it hits too close to home atm

  14. Ohhh noooooooooo! I had a super bad feeling last chapter and then seeing the first picture in this chapter, I knew something bad was going to happen. This is not good! My heart is truly sad. 😩😩😩😩😩 This is going to mess Ben over so, so much! He was afraid Grace would leave him…and she did… in the most tragic in worst way. Oh, this is truly devastating.

OK, so I have made a decision. I am hijacking the story right now. I am resurrecting Grace and taking her to Mayo Clinic. These Sim City doctors are complete charlatans. 😀😀😩😀😩😩😩😩😩

      • I can totally relate. I have some very sad parts to my stories as well and blubber when I have to write a chapter like that. Then when I’m done, I have to go recover in a dark room and grab a glass,,,or two…or three…of wine. It’s awful. I tend to be up on my characters a lot. It makes for a good story but it’s still very emotionally draining, I won’t lie. You get so invested in your characters that it’s hard when a sad chapter comes up.

I know for my stuff, I put hanky warnings whenever appropriate.
