Ben picked up Sofia at her apartment the next morning. He was ridiculously excited about spending the day with two of his favorite people, Sofia and Cole. She had Cole eating out of her hand in the first five minutes of the 45 minute drive to the nursing home in San Myshuno.
On the way, they stopped by the park to see the new sign. It meant so much to Ben that Sofia instinctively knew how healing this would be for everyone. He asked her to take a picture for Lillie May.
When they arrived at the nursing home, Cole readily let his new friend carry him inside, jabbering about Gran and cookies.
Ben couldn’t help the little grin that appeared on his face watching the two of them. “Lillie May always has some treat for him when he comes,” explained Ben. “We have been coming here every two weeks since he was born, so he gets excited when we come. He loves his Gran.”
Ben knocked on Lillie May’s door and the trio walked into her room. She was already out of bed, settled in her wheelchair and ready with hugs for her great-grandson. Cole wiggled out of Sofia’s arms and ran into the waiting arms of smiling old woman. “Gran!” he squealed.
“Cole, sweetie. Give your Gran a kiss.” The two year old climbed into her lap and obliged with a slobbery kiss.
“Hi Miss Lillie,” said Ben and kissed her dry cheek. “How are you feeling?”
“Better now that you are here,” she said. “And who is your lovely companion?”
Sofia stood up and extended her hand. “Hi. I’m Sofia Hamlin. I’ve heard lots of great things about you. It’s truly a pleasure to meet you. I work with Ben at Chapman Construction.”
Lillie May gave Cole a toy car and he scooted off her lap and onto the floor to play. Sofia and Ben took the chairs across from her. “Hamlin?” ask Lillie May, “Isn’t that the handsome young man that stood up for you at your wedding Ben?”
When Sofia answered for him, Ben laughed to himself and sat back to enjoy the show. “Oh yes!” said Sofia enthusiastically, “That was Nick. He’s my older brother. I think he’s cute too, but please don’t tell him I said that. He still lives in San Myshuno. He only has a year left in college. Ohh, Ben, maybe we can call him and he can go fishing with us while we are here.” Sofia immediately directed her attention back to Lille May with out missing a beat. “Ben and I are going to take Cole fishing after we leave here. Aren’t we kiddo?”
“Fishing!” parroted Cole.
“That’s nice,” said Lillie May with a twinkle in her eye, “Have you and Ben known each other long?”
“Yes, forever!” answered Sofia and Ben had to stifle a laugh. “We used to hang out a lot when we lived in Twinbrook. Before Ben and Nick left for college. We went fishing all the time. We were fishing buddies. Now that I am working with Ben, well, I guess we are working buddies now. Oh….work! Ben has something to tell you!” Suddenly Sofia looked mortified. “And I’m talking way too much.”
Lillie May laughed. “You are a joy. I can see why Ben and Cole like you so much. So, Ben, what is it you needed to tell me?”
“You know that we are building a huge community park in Newcrest. Sofia here decided we should name it and actually came up with a really nice suggestion….” Ben got emotional and couldn’t continue.
Sofia put her hand on Ben’s arm and looked at him affectionately letting him know with her eyes that it was okay and she would tell her the rest. Ben sat back and tried to pull himself together as Sofia spoke. “Mrs. Coleman, we want to dedicate the park to Grace’s memory. We want to name it after her, Grace Ramsay Recreation Center. Ben, why don’t you show her the picture we took.”
Lillie May’s smile lit up her face even as silent tears wet her cheeks when she looked at the picture on his phone. “You have no idea how much that means to this old lady. Thank you. And Sofia, it’s Lillie May or Miss Lillie, as Ben likes to call me, or even Gran.”
“Miss Lillie,” said Ben, now that he had control of his emotions, “when we finish the park there will be an official dedication and party. We would love for you to be there.”
“A field trip! I wouldn’t miss it,” said Lillie May, “Thank you again.”
“Field Twip. Fishing!” said Cole, eliciting laughter from everyone in the room.
“I think someone is ready for their fishing trip. How about a cookie before you go little man?” asked Lillie May.
“Cookies!” said Cole and clapped his hands.
“Sofia, the cookies are on the counter in the kitchenette. Would you mind?”
As soon as Sofia and Cole were out of earshot, Lillie May rolled her chair closer to Ben. “She’s delightful Ben. I’m so happy for you. She cares a great deal for you and that little boy. It’s time for you to be happy again.”
Ben was speechless and stood there with his mouth open looking for words.
“Close your mouth Benjamin. It’s okay. You have my blessing.”
He shook his head. “There is nothing…”
“Pffft. Yes there is. I may be old but I’m not blind. Any fool can see how you look at each other. She looks at you just like Grace did, with eyes full of love. Maybe you just don’t want to admit it to each other yet, but it’s there. And besides, I really like her. You have my blessing Ben, if that’s what you are worried about.”
“No…you don’t understand…”
“That’s all. Now, go get a cookie for an old lady, would you?”
Ben just sat there trying to figure out why she said what she did. There wasn’t anything but a deep friendship between them. And besides, Sofia was in a committed relationship of more than three years. The only reason she was in Willow Creek was to be near Jesse.
“Go…now. I’m hungry for one of those cookies. Shoo.”
Ben jumped up and ran into the kitchenette where he saw Sofia helping Cole with his cookie. He stopped short, watching them. It wasn’t hard to imagine the three of them together as a family. He wished that Lillie May hadn’t planted that seed in his head though, because it could never be. She’s just a really good friend, like Emma or Nick, he thought.
He took a deep breath and shook it off . He walked in to grab a cookie for his grandmother-in-law.
Before they left for their fishing trip, Ben did his best to get a picture of Lillie May with the squirmy toddler and promised to get it printed so she could hang it on her wall.

Awwww, such a cute chapter, I really hope Ben and Sofia get their happy ever after, but somehow, I doubt it’s going to be plain sailing.

Yes. He is falling hard….I think they both are…but neither one is ready to do anything about it.

Aww, yes! Miss Lillie is so right, just like I’ve said before I was hoping for something more developing between Sofia and Ben. And her boyfriend doesn’t bring out positive feelings in me, it is as if something was off, also Sofia avoids talking about him, and he’s a creepy stalker. I sense a plotline with him coming about. It was great to see Miss Lillie again!

Miss Lillie ❤️❤️❤️ She’s the best.
So Jesse has your creep antenna buzzing? Yes, he’s not going to just let this go. He hates Ben and his girlfriend just kissed him – chastely – but it was still an intimate gesture. We will see how he deals with it soon. Buckle up.

Way to go Lillie! That’s exactly what he needed to hear from you! Now he just needs to give himself his blessing and find a way to get Graces. Maybe a dream where she tells him or Cole does something that can be translated into a blessing? I love that they both seem to like Sofia, it seems that’s our ship will sail soon or maybe in a few chapters?

We shall. That depends a lot on Sofia. I think she is falling for Ben, but is conflicted because of her long term relationship with Jesse.

That is true, it won’t be right away but with time Sofia can do it.

Meh, screw Jesse, whether Sofia and Ben get together or not.
But it does seem like a serious possibility and if it makes them happy…why not?

Lol. No kidding. He looked quite evil. Ben is using Jesse as an easy out I think to not deal with his conflicted feelings.

Lillie is such a gem! ❤ Any chapter with her in it is precious! And she totally caught on the chemistry between Ben and Sofia, and it's a good thing Cole seems to adore her too! ❤
I hope they'll soon get to do more ehmm… activities, other than fishing! 😉😉 ❤

Lol. What other activities could you be thinking of? 😂 Lilli May is a total gem. ❤️ I am so glad Ben fell in love with her at his and Grace’s wedding. It would have been inexcusable if he would have cut Cole out of her life. I am glad she encouraged Ben to act on his feelings or st least admit them.

I think part of why Grace was an angel was because she was raised by one ❤

Lillie May knows how to call it! lol I really loved how she reacted – her face lit up but she had tears coming down her cheeks – when they told her the name of the park. I love this lady so much and hope she’s around for a lot longer.

I love her too! She is just so awesome. I dread the day when she isn’t around. 😦 She doesn’t hold back. She is very wise as are most elders. They have seen a lot! She really liked Sofia and could see the connection she and Ben had. She could have become a bitter old lady, but instead chose not to. ❤

Yes, the seed has been planted. Now the thought will never leave Ben alone.
But the fact that he still wears his wedding ring shows that he is not read to move on quite yet. It was so cute seeing the three of them, and Lillie May is a delight as always, but I am not looking forward to what will happen when they get back home to find Jesse waiting for them.

Yes. He won’t let that thought go. He is smitten and doesn’t want to admit it. The wedding ring is a huge thing for him. That actually comes up in a future chapter. Are you reading my drafts? 😂 And then of course there is the Jesse thing to deal with. Pesky little details. 😇

Sofia should have been honest with Jesse from the start, and by not telling him she has made a bad situation even worse.
I may or may not have broken into your place and I may or may not have read your notes. I just couldn’t help it. I needed to know what was going to happen next!!

😂😂 I guess I need to change that password now! But, yes, by lying to Jesse it likely made it way worse. 😢 Stay tuned. Wednesday we will see some things happen with Jesse, Sofia and Ben.

Was the peeping tom at the cafe Jesse? I made the assumption he is but good job on making that whole thing kinda creepy. On his part. lol.

It totally was Jesse! He just happened to see them. Then he just watched….instead of confronting them. Her kissing Ben on the cheek really got him. Can’t blame him for that though.

Yesssss Lillie May is a smart old lady 😉 Listen to her Ben! (But first, dump Jesse, Sofia 😛 It’s clear you love Ben. And the fact that you keep having to lie and keep secrets from Jesse tells me he’s a controlling POS, so… yeah. Bye, Jesse. Hello, Ben 😛 …As if it’d really be that easy. Ha!)

Yep…let’s hope it’s that easy. They are both between a rock and a hard place. Jesse, her three year relationship and Grace, a ghost. 😢. But Lillie May is nobody’s fool. She gets it and they are both still very young. It’s time to move on – with each other!
Bye Felecia or is that Jesse! 😂

This was so cute! Lillie is such a nice person! I hope child Cole meets her, if you know what I mean…Also, if Jesse hasn’t said a thing about Ben and Sofia to Sofia, he must have some plan in mind…Or he’s just waiting for the right moment. ( In both casesm it isn’t a good thing.)

Grandma knows best. we will see how you craft the dark clouds of cannibus and Jesses true face when his trust of Sofia is gone due to her lying and sneaking off. All this is a natural reaction when you are being controlled by another….
Anyway great crafting of Lillie May. She is so sweet to tell that to Ben. And I am going to read a few more chapters….

Sofia is just adorable with her cute rambling 🙂 ❤ And yeah, they're totally just friends. Nothing more. Nope. Not them.
Look at them, though, making bedroom eyes at each other. Seriously. Now all that's left is to get her creepy boyfriend out of the way. I don't like his jealousy or the stalking. It's just red flags all over.

I’m just now realizing I’ve been alternating between Sophia/Sofia, hehe my bad. It doesn’t help that I have people I know who use both spellings irl, lol. I shall be saying Sofia going forward 😇
Back to the story, this was such a sweet chapter~ Lillie May knows what’s going on, haha even if Ben and Sofia don’t want to admit it or act on it just yet, given the creepy boyfriend is still in the picture. All this sweetness makes me suspicious of that eventual drama I sense is incoming.

Oh, Ben. There’s nothing, eh? A good friend, like EMMA, eh? Whom you were absolutely happy to see in a relationship with someone other than yourself, eh? Don’t fool an old woman, she has seen the world, both the good and bad sides of it.
Lillie May is my all-time favorite, she’s just so sweet and strong and supportive and nothing can change my opinion on that 😫💖

I looove Lillie May! ❤️❤️ She has been around awhile and she knows what’s happening. I love the comparison to Emma. Ben loved her in his own way and they may have been a good match, but he was just too volatile and unpredictable for her. She needed calm. But at least Emma remained a good friend. 🥰. Ben is desperately trying to friend zone Sofia too. They both are.

Awwwww. This was such an adorable tracker. Sofia is really good with Cole, and he seems to really like her, too. I don’t think Ben realizes just yet how much that connection actually does run deep with her. He needs to listen to Lillie May, who I absolutely adore, by the way. Damn, it makes me miss my own grandmother. I got rather teary-eyed watching her hold Cole. 😩 Anyway, she is a wise lady. Sofia needs to totally dump Jesse and go with Ben. He would treat her much better. However, I think Jesse would make a lot of trouble. He seems to me the very abusive sort and wouldn’t let her go so easily. I think he has a penchant for violence, and not just toward her. He gives me the willies.
