Chapter 64 – We’re Getting Married Today

Ben got up and took a long, hot shower before Cole woke up. Today, he was getting married.  Again.  He realized he was nervous – and not just because it was his second marriage or a big fancy affair.  He was nervous because he wanted everything to be perfect for Sofia. His and Sofia’s entire family would be there along their friends.

While the hot water washed away some of the tension, he thought back five years ago to the last time he was with his entire family. They had come together to wish him well as he left for College.  Looking back, he was ashamed that he couldn’t wait to be rid of them. Now, he was thankful everyday for them. They had been a godsend for him, Cole and even Sofia.  He had learned a hard lesson with Grace’s death and the birth of his son. Never take your family for granted. They are the ones who will always be there for you and love you no matter what. He vowed to himself he would make life as happy as he possibly could for Sofia and Cole so they would never feel unloved.

Still, Ben would have been fine if they had just gone to a J.P. to get married, but when he saw how Sofia lit up talking about their wedding, he could never take that away from her. He laughed when he remembered the advice his soon to be father-in-law had given him. Edmund, as he had asked Ben to call him, had been right. Ben had nothing to say about anything regarding the wedding except the bachelor party.  And then he wasn’t entirely sure he had anything to say about that either.

He had to admit, Casey outdid himself with the party.  They simply went camping. Thank goodness no girls popped out of a tent. Emma, maybe even Sofia, probably had just a little to do with that. Regardless, it had been great fun with just the guys, in a cabin, in the woods with lots and lots of beer and food, telling crazy stories around the campfire.

After his shower, Ben went to wake up Cole.  They  were going to his mom’s house for breakfast before heading to the church. Cole was still sound asleep, so instead of waking him right away, he decided to text Sofia. Sofia had cut off all contact the afternoon before.  ‘It’s bad luck’ she had said.  He typed “I love you” and hit send anyway. She immediately texted back two rows of heart emojis. He couldn’t help but smile. It was enough to help quell his nerves, temporarily anyway.

He leaned over and gently shook his son awake. “Time to wake up buddy. We’re getting married today.”
