Chapter 2.02 – Pinky Swear

04-13-18_6-48-29 PM.pngAs soon as they arrived at the cabin, Cole and Noah got ready to go fishing. Before they left, they argued over who would could catch the most fish and finally made a bet on it before leaving for the lake.

04-13-18_6-49-03 PM.pngAs they turned to leave, Cole heard his sister whine, ‘Mommy, I wanna fish’.  He looked at Noah. “Come on. Let’s go – quick,” he said, before his mom could tell him to take her.

04-12-18_9-18-15 PM.pngNoah didn’t need to be told twice. “Race you!” he called out as he took off, leaving Cole behind.

Cole tried to catch up, Duke hot on his heels, but Noah had too much of a head start. When he got to the lake, Noah already had his hook in the water.

04-12-18_9-03-32 PM.png “That wasn’t fair. You had a head start! I bet I catch more fish than you anyway,”  challenged Cole as he tossed his hook into the water.

“Well, if you do, it’s only because your parents take you all the time.”

04-12-18_9-03-02 PM.pngCole ignored the barb and the boys fished in companionable silence for awhile. Finally Noah broke the silence. “Do you think Kolby likes boys?” he asked.

04-12-18_9-07-01 PM.png “Sure, he hangs out with us all the time,” replied Cole, thinking that was a stupid question.

“No, doofus, I mean likes boys, like he wants to marry a boy instead of a girl,” said Noah.

04-12-18_9-10-09 PM “Ohhh,” said Cole, “You mean like he wants to kiss a boy?” The thought of kissing a girl was weird, but kissing a boy was even weirder.

04-12-18_9-09-39 PM “Duhhh. My Uncle said he thought he was gay and I should be careful around him.  But, I like Kolby. I mean, I don’t want to kiss him, like him.  But he’s my friend, even if he is a little weird, but you’re weird too. Anyway, if he ever did try to kiss me, I would punch him. What about you?”

04-12-18_9-04-34 PM.png “Me too! But, I would punch Nicky too if she tried to kiss m….Hey! I got a bite! We will eat tonight!” said Cole excitedly and pumped his fist in the air. He began to wrestle with the fish, all talk of their friends forgotten.

04-12-18_9-05-20 PMAbout the same time Noah felt a strong tug on his line. “I got one too! I bet mine is bigger than yours!” said Noah and managed to pull his fish in first.

04-12-18_9-01-34 PM.png “Bet!” replied Cole as he proudly held up his fish a minute later.

04-13-18_7-20-43 PM.pngThat evening, Ben and the boys cooked the fish they had caught around the campfire, laughing and telling stories while Sofia put Ami to bed.

04-13-18_7-32-31 PM.pngAfter her daughter was asleep, she walked outside and stood watching as Ben finished telling the boys a ghost story.  She couldn’t recall seeing Ben so relaxed and happy. And the boys were definitely eating up his story. She laughed at herself when she jumped at the ending.

When Ben looked up and saw her, he gave her a warm smile and motioned for her to join them. “Just in time to roast marshmallows,” he said.

04-13-18_7-41-01 PM.pngNoah nudged Cole and nodded towards his dad. When the boys exchanged a look, she wondered what they were up to.

“Hey Dad, can we sleep in the tent tonight?” asked Cole.

04-13-18_7-48-11 PM.pngBen stole a glance at her before answering. Sofia was worried about them, but there was no way she could veto their fun so she smiled her approval. “Sure,” said Ben, apparently reading her silent smile correctly, “It’s not raining or too cold.  You should be fine as long as you stay in the tent. If you get scared, we are right inside.”

Both boys rolled their eyes at Ben.

04-13-18_7-36-34 PMBen laughed. “Okay, I’ll help you set it up.”

04-13-18_8-01-53 PMBy the time they finally got the tent setup, it was bedtime.  The two boys went inside, but they were both too keyed up to sleep.

04-13-18_8-03-09 PM.pngNoah had the flashlight Ben had given them and was playing with it. “Let’s go for a walk,” said Noah.  “We have the lantern. It will be fun. Maybe we will see a wild animal.”

“I don’t know,”  said Cole, “we aren’t supposed to leave the tent.”

04-13-18_8-21-36 PM.png “Chicken! What are you? A momma’s boy? Oh wait, your momma’s dead like mine!” he said and laughed.

“Shut up Noah! That’s not funny.”

“Just because she has a park named after her doesn’t make her special,” chided Noah.

04-13-18_8-25-24 PM.pngCole felt tears burning his eyes. Noah had no idea how bad he wished that park was not named for his dead mother. Everyone always teased him about it. He never even knew her and wished that his Stepmother was really his mother.

04-13-18_8-29-11 PM.pngBut he felt bad for Noah too, because he didn’t have a mother or father, just his Uncle. So he gave in. Cole took a deep breath. “Come on, let’s go. I bet we can catch some frogs by the lake. But you gotta promise to be quiet!

04-13-18_9-16-57 PM.pngThe boys left the tent and started walking towards the lake. Duke following along.

04-13-18_9-21-06 PM.pngThey sat down together on the log that had been carved out to make a bench. It was weirdly quiet except for the frogs croaking and an occasional splash in the water.

“This is so cool,” whispered Noah.

“Yeah, Listen,” said Cole, “You can hear the frogs. I want to catch one and take it home.”

04-13-18_9-23-24 PM.png “Or put it down Nicky’s shirt! That would be so funny,” said Noah and both boys began to giggle at the thought.

“Shhhh,” whispered Cole, “we are gonna get caught! Oh, look, there is a frog over there, in the grass. Be real still and I’ll try to catch it.”

04-13-18_10-20-51 PMNoah stayed put while Cole got on the ground and crept towards the frog. Duke watched like he was going to protect Cole from whatever he was going after in the tall grass. Cole lunged at it before it could hop away and grabbed it.

“You got it!” yelled Noah excitedly as Cole stood up with the frog in hand.

04-13-18_10-57-25 PMJust then a deep voice boomed directly behind Noah. “Who’s there?”

04-13-18_10-50-46 PM.pngNoah screamed and jumped up. Cole jumped too and quickly stuffed the frog in his pocket. His eyes were wide as he gazed at the largest, hairiest man thing he had ever seen, standing right behind Noah, with his hands on his hips. Cole swallowed hard before answering. “Uh, we have a cabin just up there. We just came down to watch the fish,” he managed to squeak out.

Duke stood next to Cole, his tail wagging happily, which made Cole feel a little better.

04-13-18_11-09-11 PM “Uh huh. You two boys know there’s bears in these here woods?” asked the man, his voice deep and gravelly. “There’s a reason you ain’t ‘posed to be out here after dark. Your folks know you boys out here?”

04-13-18_11-14-47 PMCole’s heart was pounding. He had to peal his tongue from the roof of his mouth before had could answer this time. “Uh, we were just going back, sir, weren’t we Noah?” he asked glancing at Noah for confirmation.

Noah was frozen in place. Cole could swear he saw tears running down his face.

04-13-18_11-26-21 PM.png “C’mon boys, I’ll walk ya’ll back so as no bears git ya an’ your dog,” he said.

“Please don’t tell my Uncle,” begged Noah and sniffed.

04-13-18_11-29-11 PM “If’n I see ya in these parts agin after dark, I will hafta report ya. Now let’s git a’fore a bear finds us.”

04-13-18_11-37-06 PM.pngThe boys followed the burly man out of the woods and back to their tent. He left them as quietly as he arrived, without a word.

“I gotta go to the bathroom. I’ll be right back,” said Noah, still visibly upset.

When he turned around to leave, Cole thought his pants looked wet. When he came back into the tent, he had changed into a different pair of pants.

04-13-18_8-40-09 PM.png “Dude, did you pee your pants or something?” asked Cole grinning.

04-13-18_8-42-04 PM.png “Shut up. I had to go bad and that Yeti snuck up on me and scared me. You better not tell anyone!”

“I won’t,” said Cole still laughing.

04-13-18_8-36-03 PM.png “Pinky swear?” asked Noah.

04-13-18_8-38-36 PM.pngPinky swear?” repeated Cole and laughed harder.

04-13-18_8-42-48 PM.png “Pinky swear!!!”

Noah was really upset so Cole tried not to laugh. He stood up and stuck out his pinky finger and they hooked fingers.

04-13-18_8-54-58 PM.png “Swear you won’t tell?” asked Noah.

“I swear.”

“Say it then..”

04-13-18_8-52-34 PM.png “Say what?”

“Cross your heart…”

04-13-18_8-58-47 PM.pngCole rolled his eyes, “Fine,” he said, and with pinkies still interlocked repeated the rhyme. “Cross my heart, hope to die, stick a thousand needles in my eye. I swear I won’t tell.”

04-13-18_9-03-59 PM.pngCole felt something cold run down his leg. “Crap, the frog peed on me!  Gross. Now I have to change. I’ll just tell mom that it peed on both of us. I need to find a box to put him in anyway. Oh, and we caught it right outside the tent, right Noah?”

“Right. Thanks,” said Noah looking relieved.

Thank you to VanPelt81 for submitting Vegard Bjornstad in my casting call.  He made an awesome gentle Mountain Man to scare the pee out of my boys.  😮

  2. Well, I really do wonder where the boys got the bit about Kolby being gay from (or where Noah’s uncle got it from)! I believe no one should make any assumptions unless he tells it himself. Even if he was, though, why would Noah have to be careful?! Come on, they’re all just little boys! Geez. And I could see one of them hooking up with Nicky eventually… Who knows!
The Mountain Man is so cool! I love how he made the boys come back to their tent. Poor Noah peed himself, ha, ha. Oh my, I already love these boys so much! Such little clueless and innocent ones.

    • Noah’s Uncle is an ass. That’s why Noah projects this tough persona. That’s what I was going for anyway. You can tell the boys didn’t really care. But it bothered Noah that his Uncle said mean things about his friend. That’s why he asked Cole. He values his opinion even though he doesn’t show it. And yes, OMG….they are so sweet and innocent right now. They both grow up to be handsome men, so Nicky better watch out!

The Mountain Man was so much fun. 😂😂😂

  3. Oh boy, that was a fun chapter… I guess we don’t know a lot about any of Cole’s friends, because I had no idea that Noah only lived with his uncle. It’ll be fun to learn more of the backstory of the kiddos and anybody else we meet. (I realize I could probably go back and read through the casting call again, but I’m not sure how many details you took from those bios and also I’m too lazy).

I really want to know more about Kolby now. I was very much that boy that everybody thought was gay back in kindergarten; I wonder how perceptions about him will change as he gets older… it always annoys me when adults try to get boys to act more like men and teaching them what’s right and wrong about being a man when they’re little kids (or even teens/adults – it’s such a narrow definition of manhood… we can’t all be mountain men).

Speaking of which – loved the mountain man. I love that there’s just a homeless vagrant (I assume) wandering around the woods and rescuing little boys and their dogs from bears in the middle of the night.

I also hope he tells on them.

    • I had a lot of fun with the chapter. Nobody knew until today that Noah lived with his Uncle. I did use as much of the backstories as I could for the kids to give them character, it don’t bother reading through it, Because all them won’t be exactly true to what was written. And Kolby is actually gay. He was submitted that way.

Noah’s Uncle was doing to Kolby what people did to you sadly. But in this case he was right about him being gay bit not right about being careful. He is very much a homophobe and didn’t want Noah to be “exposed”. Noah’s Uncle is a jerk. But that’s part of why Noah acts tough.

The mountain man! I loved him! A gentle soul but super scary to little boys! We won’t find out if he tells on them. But surely Cole eventually fessed up when his mom asked him about the wet clothing! 😂😂😂

  4. I love the boys. They are so cute. Good idea with the Mountain Man. I can totally see something like that happen in RL, even the need to change their pants after that. 😀
I’m super curious what kind of teens they will be, especially considering Noah uncle’s influence.

    • The boys are great and they will likely remain friends long into adulthood. Fortunately for Noah he has Cole’s family (and. Ole though he would never admit it) as an alternative role model, although his Uncle most certainly have some influence on him. Mostly his tough guy attitude. I sorta see Cole to Noah as Nick was to Ben. Although I don’t think Noah is as screwed up as Ben was.

And the mountain man was so much fun! I totally loved him.

  5. The mountain man is amazing! What a great sim! LOL the boys had lots of fun in this sweet chapter .. my youth do that kind of thing every time I take them all camping UGH .. I know one day someone will get hurt but it id difficult to convince them LOL

    • Yes, their relationship isn’t as loving as Cole’s family. Thank goodness he has another perspective. 😁 His Uncle probably loves Noah, but didn’t want kids and got stuck with him when Noah’s parents died in an accident. He is trying to teach him to be a man, sort of like what SuperKyle said in his comment.

  6. Loved this chapter, and loved the old mountain man. I already don’t like Noah’s uncle and I have yet to meet him. How dare he make such assumptions, and even if he is right, so what? The boys bonding was great. I loved the mountain man. So mysterious, reminds me a bit of Ed LOL

  7. I’m so sorry for my late comment!!
Cole is such a good kid! And certainly braver than Noah, lol! But why do the other kids tease him about the park?
Noah’s uncle sounds like a big douche, I hope he doesn’t leave his mark on Noah..!
The Mountain Man was extra cool, I really hope we’ll get to see him again (although I doubt it, he seemed a bit old)!
This chapter was super fun!! 😀

    • It was a fun chapter. No apologies please. Thank you for reading! ❤️ Noah’s uncle is a douche and no doubt is responsible for his behavior. Cole really wasn’t as afraid, although he probably should have been. He trusts people where Noah doesn’t so much. Kids are just mean and jealous. That’s all, but it bothers him.

  8. Yeti! LMAO! hahaha Poor Noah. I really enjoyed this chapter with the family. Boy, do I remember those days when I tried to escape with my friends before my mom was able to tell me to bring my little sister along. LOL 😀

  9. I loved this one! What a fun chapter. It was great to get to know Noah a little more (dang, his uncle is an ass though, huh?) and see his bond with Cole. That pee stain 😂 That mountain man WAS pretty freaky haha 😉 your screenshots were so great in this one! ❤️❤️❤️

  11. Oh, well, we will se how things goes! That bit about watching out for him was a bit…Yeah…So, I did not know that people teased Cole for his mother, I really was wondering if their were going to fight because of the coments about his mother…On another note, this chapter was fun! Will the yeti man return? Will Noah pee his pants again? See in another chapter!

    • Omplans for a return of yeti man, but yes, Cole gets teased about the park. 🙄 Kids can be mean. Noah peeing his pants was the best! He pretends to be tough and then that happens… Cole got a good laugh out of it, but swore to keep it a secret because he and Noah are best friends along with Nicky and Kolby.

  12. Aww, little boys having little boy shenanigans!

Noah is going to be a handful when he grows up, but maybe Cole will the friend that tempers that a bit, lol… or gets taken along for the ride 😬

  13. Parents, caregivers, have to be very very careful not to pass their prejudices onto their children. Children are not born prejudiced they get it from their environment/parents/caregivers.. We already see what a bad influence Noah is on Cole so he gives in to peer pressure and keeping secrets….
The best thing a parent can do is build up their self esteem, and Keep saying if your friend told you to jump off a cliff would you do it? No……. So they learn not to give in to bad peer pressure..
Interesting story so far realistic characters and beautiful scenes of Granite Falls. Thanks for your crafting this gem.

    • Thanks…Noah for sure has a very different home life from Cole. Not a loving environment and he is most certainly a bit jealous of that as we will see much later.

  14. Oh yikes. Doesn’t sound like this uncle is doing too hot a job in the parenting department, pushing these ideologies on Noah. He has a very swayed of thinking that he is clearly picking up at home. I really hope he’ll grow out of it. At least in that, he has Cole as a friend who seems way more open and understanding. I LOLed at the punching Nicky quote though, what a funny little-boy thing to say. And the mountain man! What a great looking sim, that’s hilarious! His accent was great, too!

    • Noah’s Uncle is a grade a asshole. There is no love lost between him and his Uncle. Ben is more of a father figure to him than his Uncle. He will learn that there is nothing wrong with being gay. He and Kolby will remain friends with no judgement from Noah.

The mountain man was so much fun. I loved that part. ❤️
