Two weeks after Jesse had attacked Sofia, Ben went with her to the clinic for the pregnancy test. She had refused to do one at home. If she were pregnant, she wanted to be where she could ask questions. He wondered if she really just wanted to put it off.
He was worried about her state of mind. When the officer took her statement, Sofia asked if she could file a restraining order. She told her she would need to contact an attorney. Leroy gave her the name of the one they had used in Kaitlin’s divorce. She needed one anyway since she was filing charges against Jesse.
They walked hand-in-hand into the clinic. Even though Sofia had pulled herself together, Ben could tell that underneath that beautiful, calm exterior, she was still a mess. The way she gripped his hand, he knew she was terrified of the outcome of the test. Ben suddenly shuddered, as a feeling of deja vu washed over him.
His discomfort didn’t go unnoticed by Sofia. “Are you okay Ben? You didn’t have to come with me.” Then she gasped when it hit her. “Oh Ben, is this where Grace…? You should have told me.”
His heart broke. She read him so well. Sweet, sweet Sofia. In the midst of what she was going through, she worried about him. He had been here lots of times with Cole. He figured maybe the feeling of dread was because Sofia might be pregnant.
“It’s okay. I’m fine,” he said, doing his best to reassure her. “I just had a weird feeling. It’s over now. Besides, there is no way I would let you go through this alone.”
When they sat down to wait their turn, Sofia relaxed into the crook of Ben’s arm. “You are so good to me,” she whispered, “Thank you.”
He wished he could tell her how he felt. But he knew she wasn’t ready to hear it. As as long as she continued to let him comfort her, for now, that would be enough.
When they called her name, she turned and asked if he would come in with her. He hadn’t expected that, but was relieved she had asked. He would have gone crazy imagining what she might be going through alone.
“Sure,” he said with a smile. When they stood up to follow the receptionist, Ben grabbed her hand again. The physical contact soothed them both. Sofia smiled gratefully and gave his hand a squeeze. He knew then, she would be okay, no matter the outcome.
The doctor came in and asked her to provide a urine sample. “This way, if it’s positive we can quickly do some additional tests. The test will only take a few minutes. I will see you back in here as soon as we have the results. Do you have any questions?” Sofia shook her head and followed her out.
When Sofia came back in, she sat down next to Ben and they waited together in silence. Ben could tell she was on the verge of tears so he took both of her hands in his and gently rubbed them. It seemed to calm them both. “No matter what, I will be here for you,” said Ben to try and ease her fears. She said nothing in reply and his heart sunk. Maybe she was more broken than he thought.
The doctor walked back in. “Ms. Hamlin, I’m so sorry. The test was negative.”
Sofia let out a big breath and said, “Oh God,” at the same time as she threw herself into Ben’s arms crying. Ben held her tight. “Shhh, it’s okay now,” he said softly even though he knew her tears were tears of relief, not sadness.
The doctor looked at them with empathy. “It’s okay, Miss Hamlin,” she said, “You are both young and healthy. How long have you been trying?”
The doctor obviously had no idea she had given them good news and Ben wasn’t about to explain. “No. It’s okay,” he said quickly, “Thank you. Can we just go now?”
“Sure,” she said looking bewildered, “would you like to make an appointment for a consult?”
“No thank you,” replied Ben. He whispered to Sofia, “Come on Sweetheart. Let’s get you out of here.” He put his arm around Sofia and led her out.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
They walked across the street to the ice cream parlor. Once seated, Ben ordered for them.
“I’m sorry I lost it in there,” said Sofia softly, “Thank you for being there. It meant a lot.”
Why was she apologizing? wondered Ben. “Hey, it’s understandable. I’m just glad I could be there for you.”
“Me too,” she said, her words barely audible.
Once they got their ice cream, Sofia pushed it around in the bowl. She was lost in thought, as evidenced by her bottom lip pulled between her teeth. She was looking everywhere, except at Ben.
Ben would give anything to know what was going through her head. He was hoping she would have been better after the positive news. Her silence was killing him. Finally, he couldn’t take it any longer. “Hey,” he said gently, “what’s going on in that pretty head of yours?”
Sofia looked at him, still chewing on her bottom lip. Ben held his breath waiting for her answer. “Ben…I think I’m going to drop the charges.”
Ben almost choked on his ice cream. He slowly shook his head. “No, Sofia…”
Sofia held up her hand to stop his objection. “Please, hear me out. Knowing that I’m not pregnant was a huge relief. Not that I don’t want children, I do. I love kids. I adore Cole. But, don’t you see? Now I can just put this behind me and get Jesse out of my life. I feel like I can move forward. Don’t get me wrong, if I were pregnant, I would have kept the baby. But then Jesse would always be a part of my life. I would forever be bound to him. Now, we can go our separate ways and I can try to forget that I wasted three years on him. But if I go through a trial, it will just drag out the inevitable. And it will be years before it’s over, if ever.”
Ben’s heart was breaking for her. He wanted to see Jesse behind bars for what he put her through. It was all Ben could do to remain calm. He knew getting upset wouldn’t help her. “What about Justice. You’re going to let him just walk away, after what he did?”
Sofia laughed. A real laugh, confusing Ben. She gave him a tender smile when he looked at her like she was crazy. “Jesse got his due, Ben. You gave him a black eye.” She stopped and giggled. “And Leroy knocked him out cold and broke his nose. I feel vindicated and I think he learned a lesson.”
Her smile faded a little. “But seriously, I think we can bargain with him. We will tell him we will drop the charges as long as I never see his face again. We still have the restraining order. That could stay in place. I talked to your Mom. She said, as part of the bargain he should be required to get therapy. It helped your Dad. Besides, he has a lot to lose if this goes to trail. And honestly Ben, I would go through that and he would likely be let off anyway. They would spin it as a lover’s quarrel. I don’t want to give him the satisfaction of winning. I’m ready to move on. I want my life back, to go back to work, if Leroy will still have me.”
Ben loved her more than he thought possible. She was strong and resilient. “You’re amazing. I – uh.” Ben stopped short. He almost blurted out his feelings. He recovered quickly and smiled at Sofia. “Of course he will have you back. I need you. We are a team. I have to get back to the office anyway. Why don’t you go with me and you can talk to Leroy?”
Sofia smiled a big happy smile. “Okay!” she said with more life and enthusiasm than he thought possible. “Let’s do this!”
Then she started laughing, almost hysterically. Ben was bewildered. “What’s so funny?”
Sofia held her side. “Did you see the look on the Doctor’s face. Oh my god, she was devastated for me. She had no idea. Thank you for not setting her straight. You’re a mind reader.”
Ben thought about it and she did have a horrified look on her face when Sofia began to cry. He began to laugh as well. It felt good to laugh amidst all this sadness of the last two weeks. Sofia hadn’t shared her story about Jesse with him yet. But maybe one day she would. When she was ready. And then she would only hurt half as much. Or maybe not at all.
When they got up to leave, Sofia put her arms around Ben. “Thank you. Thank you for everything.”
Ben would have loved nothing more than to gather her in his arms and kiss her senseless right then and there, but instead he just said, “Anytime.”
Sofia turned and walked out of the ice cream parlor, arm in arm with Ben, and took the first step back into her life, her head held high.

Thank god she didn’t get pregnant with that jerks did, it would have been so bad for her and Jesse would still be in his life. I’m so glad she is okay and done with Jesse. I hope they can move forward but I’m concerned because I saw the title of the next chapter on the Gen One tab.

Haha! We will see if it means what you think! I am so glad she wasn’t pregnant either. It gives them both a fresh start. Let’s just hope Jesse does slink back into the hole he crawled out of….

I am glad it turned out that way too. It would hav been so hard otherwise. I think she had already decided she would keep it, but knew if she did, she wouldn’t be able to walk away without a trial because she would want to strip Jesse of all parental rights. She was so relieved that she broke down. I’m glad Ben was there for her whichever way it would have gone. She’s trying to be strong. But now she feels she can put it behind her. I just hope it is as easy as she thinks.

I’m so glad Sofia is coping. She definitely seems much better now! I hope she continues to heal and that Jesse will never have the chance to upset her again. He needs to be imprisoned for his wrongdoing.
And Sofia and Ben are super sweet together. It’s really meaningful he went there with her when he used to come there with Grace.

Yes, that affected Ben more than he wanted to let on. A pregnancy for Sofia would have been hard on Ben too because of Grace. He would be unnecessarily out of his mind with worry I’m sure.

Pheww, what a relief!! I’m glad she’s not pregnant with that scumbag’s child. Now she can leave this whole mess behind like she said. I really hope this is the last we’ll see or hear from Jesse! 😡
Ben and Sofia’s moments together after the hospital were extra sweet! He’s so in love with her ❤ And she's such a strong and caring character! I really love them together, so I hope she heals fast cause I want them to be together so freaking much! 💕

I am glad you like them together. ❤️ That was actually something I really worried about after Grace died, that no one would be good enough for Ben or that it would feel forced. Sadly, I think something like this did have to happen for him to look deep within himself and truly examine his feelings for her and recognize them for what they are. He is very much in love with her which surprised him. Next chapter will a four month time jump. So we will see how she has been coping. ❤️

Well, I think I speak on behalf of almost everyone when I say this does not feel forced at all! They’re perfect together, I like them even better because they seem to have this deep connection that kind of always existed somewhere ❤ But matbe they both had to go under some dramatic events in order to be ready for each other…
Can't wait to read the next chapter, I loved this one! ❤

I think they both needed to go through life in order to realize it. But I’m not so sure Sofia is ready yet after what happened. Had Jesse not attacked her, maybe they would have been. They did almost kiss, but maybe it would have wound up being awkward. Idk. So next Chapter is Friday!

I was hoping that since this is Valentine’s Day the chapter would be filled with love. I am so happy that Sofia is not pregnant. That jerk need to be out of their lives forever!!

I didn’t think about the timing, but there was love there. We are all happy Sofia isn’t pregnant! That makes it so much easier for her to move on. 🙂

There weren’t any declarations of love, but in this case actions speak louder than words. ❤

Phew!!! I’m so glad that Pia isn’t pregnant!! She is such a strong young woman. I’m pretty sure that she knows how she feels about Ben and that the feelings are mutual, she’ll get there and now they have all the time in the world 🙂

I think she’s knows how she feels. But maybe is a little afraid of it right now. I’m not sure she realizes the depth of his feelings for her. They have never acted on any of it nor have they verbalized to it to each other. They did come close though.
Tomorrow we will jump 4 months and see how Sofia has been holding up and if Jesse is truly out of her life.

Hi, Audrey! I tagged you to do the OC tag. I thought it would be fun to see things from Ben’s perspective.

Oh, and I meant to say, you don’t have to read Sam’s answers. You may find them quite shocking considering you haven’t read a single chapter of him yet.

Oh wow! That might be kinda fun. Maybe I can do it for Ben this evening!

I would love if you did that. I now I had a lot of fun with Sam, and there’s so much Ben could tell us, I think!

What a relief Pia isn’t pregnant. I’m so glad she is starting down the road to healing. But I do worry about the whole dropping the charges thing. I do understand why she is; she wants to move on and she’s probably right about how the trial would be – they would try to make her look bad/make him the victim, she would have to relive it, he might get off anyway, etc. It just so pains my heart in a way, though. I think the therapy would be a good idea, but I don’t agree with her that Leroy’s punch taught him a lesson. I’m afraid for the next woman he gets involved with… and the one after that… and so on. I’m not criticizing Pia’s choice at all – it’s her choice and if he hurts anyone else, it isn’t her fault, it’s his. I guess I’m just speaking from my heart and personal experience. But I do love this chapter immensely. You’ve really made me think.
And I soooo ship Pia and Ben!! I hope you didn’t find my comment offensive; I don’t mean for it to be as I adore your story.

I totally didn’t find your comment offensive in any way. I fact I was prepared for a whole lot more comments upset that she is dropping the charges. I think if she had been pregnant, she wouldn’t have. She would have demanded he give up parental rights to the child. She would have had something that was worth fighting for. Her conscious was eased slightly by knowing he would get counseling. I know her situation is not unusual. And it’s highly unlikely counseling would be a part of any bargain. But a little creative license here to move the story along.😊 I’m sorry you have had personal experience with anything close to this. ❤️ And you are right about Leroy’s punch not teaching him a lesson. Probably just pissed him off more. It would imagine it was a little satisfying for Pia because she felt like she couldn’t fight back. Their relationship was no doubt very emotionally abusive at the end. Maybe in the beginning too, but she was just too young to understand what it was. But more about that in a few chapters. Thank you so much for reading and leaving such a thoughtful comment. I do appreciate it and try to be mindful of any triggers for my readers. ❤️
P.S. I ship Pia and Ben too! Not sure if I am supposed to do that though. 😂

Yeah, I totally get where Pia is coming from. Sometimes, you do just have to move on instead of trying to fix things you can’t. Some things have no fix, if that makes sense. I’m really glad she never has to see him again.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes – she can’t fix him. You are right. You can’t fix everything and need to choose your battles. But at least she is giving him the opportunity to fix himself by forcing the counseling. Adios Jesse…No mas Jesse!

I hope she sees that she likes Ben too soon! The ”kiss you sister” ship has been throught some rought waters, but it surely will come out from this even stronger!

What a frickin relief! I was so hoping…… I’m on the fence about prosecution or not. I definitely see her point of view. I would want it over as well, if safety or recurrence was not an issue. Jesse needs therapy, but so does she. Lots and lots. Good friends are great for support, but unfortunately they can’t jump into your head and rearrange all the emotions and sweep out all the bad stuff.

It’s a hard call, whether or not to prospect. Therapy should be a requirement. But thank goodness she isn’t pregnant.

Sofia is wise to have Jesse go get help. Too many times the the abuser carrys on the cycle to another woman again and again. the cycle of abuse has to stop and counseling and therapy is the best way…
happy ending….

uhm, maybe it’s mean, but I actually would’ve liked to see gow they would deal with it, if Sofia really got pregnant.
Still glad she isn’t.
About the charges… I have to agree with RosemaryMarie. I think too many women aren’t suing, and that’s why it is still hard to get offenders convicted, and make them think they can get away with it.
It enforces victim blaming in a way :c
If it would have been “only” beating, she might have decided differently.

So true. I thought about having her be pregnant for all of 10 seconds…and then I knew everyone would be expecting exactly that so I decided against it and to let her and Ben have a fresh start. I really didn’t want to deal with the pain and confusion she and Ben would have had to work through. They truly had had enough. Although that babies story would have probably been a good one.

BAhahaha! That doctor! That was so good lol. I love that Ben is taking his mothers advice. I know he wants to tell her everything, and kiss her senseless, as he said, but I kinda like where they are right now. Of course, they have always been meant to be, and they are not strangers to each other. And, it would have been easy to accept that they could go from being friends to lovers in 10 minutes lol. But, something special and necessary is brewing here that wouldn’t necessarily have taken place if that kiss would have happened. They’ve been best friends, and they trust each other, but there is a deeper trust they never had (well, she never had) before that they’ll need for the long haul. You’re doing such a great job with this story! You see why I need breaks in between binges? You kidnap me for the entire night! LOL

*Exhales sigh of relief* I have to confess I went back to re-read the last chapter, not because I forgot what’s transpired since I’ve last read, but because I wanted to re-live the satisfaction of seeing Leroy knock Jesse out. I’m doubly glad I did now that we know Sofia isn’t pregnant with that jerk’s child! 🎊
And like some others have mentioned, the idea of dropping the charges kind of rubs me the wrong way. I totally see why Sofia wants to, it makes sense she doesn’t want to drag the headache out any longer, especially if the law will be lenient on Jesse anyway. But then I think of his next relationship and how it can end up being the same situation all over again… Unless he decides to commit to getting therapy and working on himself. It’s kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario. The only plus side to all of this is Ben being Sofia’s rock through it all and knowing what to say and when to say it ❤

Awww….you’re reading the first gen! I adore Leroy! ❤️. Dropping the charges sucked, but what would of really come it? Just keeping the wound open when he gets off.
Ben was also wonderful this chapter. He was indeed her rock. One of my favorite chapters.

This was a sweet chapter indeed 💓 Not to get ahead of myself, but I’m hoping some romance begins to properly develop between those two now 😇

Thank goodness she wasn’t pregnant. I think that might have been a huge setback for her although Ben would have been there for her and helped her through it. I totally want Jesse to pay for what he did and serve prison time, but Sofia has a point. Because she took a bath, there really wasn’t much evidence to gather. Then, she would have a hell of a time proving rape. Like she said, it would drag on and on and Jesse would probably get off anyway. Not something nice to look forward to. Let’s hope that Jesse leaves her alone and is out of her life for good. Sofia is a strong person, and I hope she can truly move forward. She may still have some really rough days though, but at least Ben will be by her side.

Yes, not being pregnant was huge. If she had been, it might have taken longer for her to heal. And if she had, Ben would definitely have stayed by her side. And yes, all of her points are valid. Let’s just hope he’s scared enough not to try anything and get the heck outta Dodge. lol.
