Chapter 2.29 – The Last Day

Warning:  NSFW Pictures

06-25-18_9-59-08 PMGraduation was bittersweet for Cole.

06-24-18_9-16-50 PM.png In less than three months his life as he knew it would change.

06-24-18_9-23-59 PM.pngHe was going to miss his friends, Doc, his parents, grandparents and even Ami.

06-28-18_8-35-21 PM.pngAmi had grown like two feet this past year. It shocked Cole when he looked at her. She was a young woman now. 13 going on 20. He sorta wished he could be around to scare off the boys that would inevitably be knocking down her door. But he figured his Dad would have that well under control.

06-28-18_9-31-29 PM.pngAnd Noah. He would miss his best friend. Noah had indeed inherited a fair amount of money and the house was now in his name. He unceremoniously kicked out his Uncle when the balance of the trust was signed over to him. He would need his job, but at least he wouldn’t struggle. Rumor had it he would be promoted to foreman when the volume ratcheted up during the summer.

06-28-18_9-40-56 PM.pngThe one Cole would miss most of all was Laney.  In one more week, she would be out of his life forever.

06-28-18_9-48-40 PM.pngThey hadn’t discussed their situation again after the night of the phone call, pretending it wasn’t a thing. She was so busy getting things ready to leave, it had left very little time for them. He could feel her distancing herself from him already, even if it wasn’t intentional. He had never seen her so happy and full of life. This was what she was always meant to do and would spend the rest of her life doing in some capacity.

06-24-18_9-20-02 PM.pngCole was relieved to be going to Brindleton Bay because he would have no memories of Laney there to haunt him. He wished he could leave the same day that she would leave for Bridgeport, because the next two months without her in Willow Creek, would be hell.

*************************************************************************************

06-29-18_7-37-17 PM.pngCole wanted his and Laney’s last day together to be memorable. He made a reservation at the Grand Hotel in San Myshuno for dinner at their rooftop restaurant, The Terrace.  The Hotel was the tallest building in San Myshuno with breathtaking views of the city.

They arrived just before sundown.  The setting sun cast long shadows across the rooftop as the sky turned all shades of yellow, orange and red.

06-29-18_7-47-27 PM.pngThey got up from the table and went to watch the show.  “Cole, this is breathtaking,” she said as she looked around.

Cole thought Laney was breathtaking, but then, he always did.  It made it that much harder to say goodbye.

06-29-18_7-50-14 PM.png“I wanted it to be special,” he said, “So enjoy. I have a surprise for desert.”

“There’s more?” she said, her eyes sparkling.

06-29-18_7-59-10 PM.pngHe reached into his pocket, pulled out the room key and showed it to her.

When she realized what it was, a knowing smile split her face. “You got a room? Here?

“I wanted to have some time alone with you before you leave.”

“You are going to make me cry,” said Laney and laid her head on his shoulder.

06-29-18_7-56-53 PM.png“Shhh. No tears. Tell me about your apartment in Bridgeport. After we eat, we can go to the room.”

*************************************************************************************

06-29-18_8-15-22 PM.png“Cole look at the view – it just keeps getting better.  I’ve never seen anything so beautiful. I feel like a princess!”

06-29-18_8-24-38 PM.png“Good, because you are,” he said and kissed her deeply until they had no need for words.

06-29-18_9-20-19 PM

06-29-18_9-15-20 PM.png“Wow. That was amazing….” said Laney when her breathing returned to normal. “I will be counting the days until I see you again. I can’t believe I’m leaving tomorrow. It’s exciting and yet so scary.”

“You don’t have to count,” said Cole mostly to himself.

Laney turned to face him and smiled. “Why? Are you going to Bridgeport with me?” she asked, running her finger down his chest playfully.

06-29-18_9-54-10 PM.pngHe looked at his tiny dancer, tears fighting to escape. He reached over and brushed her hair back. “No. I’m not. And you’re not coming back here, at least not to stay.”

06-29-18_10-36-05 PM.pngLaney’s face fell. She sat up and hugged herself and looked at him, fear written all over her face. “Don’t start this again Cole,” she warned, “It’s not like we will never see each other again. I’ll be back before we tour. And after the tour, I’ll have a break. I can see you then too.” Her tone was desperate.

Cole was strangely calm. “Laney, listen to yourself. Can’t you see, that won’t work. I don’t want a weekend with you four times a year. I want you every single day. I could live with weekends, if it was temporary, until we were out of college. But Laney, once I graduate, I’m anchored to a practice. You, on the other hand, are already beginning your career. You will probably be traveling the world before Christmas.  So no, you won’t come back to Willow Creek – ever. Your home will be Bridgeport or wherever you happen to be touring at the time.

06-29-18_9-02-03 PMSilent tears were rolling down Laney’s cheeks dripping off her chin and onto the sheet she had wrapped around her. She swiped at her face before she replied. “It will only be until you are out of college. You can open up a practice in Bridgeport. Then we can be together. You are not breaking up with me Cole. I won’t let you. I love you. And you love me too. You said so!

06-29-18_8-43-00 PM.pngThis wasn’t going like Cole envisioned it would. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly so he could talk. “I do love you. Don’t you see, even if I was In Bridgeport, you would only be there occasionally.  Would you want me to throw away my scholarship, and all that I’ve worked so hard for, to follow you?  You wouldn’t ask me to do that anymore than I would ask you to turn down this opportunity and stay here with me.  This is bigger than both of us. If either one of us sacrificed our dreams, our relationship would become toxic. And if we stay together, and tried long distance, we wouldn’t be able to make it work. You can’t have a relationship when you aren’t together.”

06-29-18_8-54-01 PM.png“Don’t say that Cole. You don’t know.”

“Laney, tell me, honestly, that once you get on that plane tomorrow you will come back to Willow Creek to live….”

When she didn’t respond he continued, “See, you can’t. You were meant to dance. I am giving you the freedom to do it without having to worry about us. Focus on yourself…” Cole swallowed hard so he could get the rest of his words out, “Maybe you will find someone that can be there for you. Travel with you and watch your performances. That can support you like you deserve.”

06-29-18_8-43-52 PM.pngLaney was crying hard. “I don’t expect you to do that! I know you can’t. You’re making this my fault! I can’t just stop loving you. How can you do this to us? We were going to get married someday and have little blue-eyed babies.”

Laney was sobbing and it was killing him.  His own tears were hot behind his eyes. “Laney….how can we have a family if we aren’t together? Don’t you see?”

“We can figure it out Cole, please,” she said trying to pull herself together.

06-29-18_8-44-25 PM.pngCole was crying now. “How Laney…tell me how.”

06-29-18_9-04-55 PM.pngHe reached over to her and she pushed him away. “So this is how it ends for us?” she said unable to look at him. “Just like that? After all I did to get you back in my life and to get you to forgive me, you walk out on me?”

“Laney, I didn’t think it would be this way…I thought you would be in school too, not starting your life. It’s not easy for me either…I…”

06-29-18_8-38-34 PMShe got up and put finger in his face. “Then you should just leave. And don’t come to the airport tomorrow. Don’t call me either.”

“Laney….”

“Go! Now!” she screamed as she grabbed her clothes and ran into the bathroom.

06-29-18_10-51-21 PM.pngCole got dressed but didn’t leave. He couldn’t leave with things like that between them. Besides he was her ride. He sat on the bed to think. He could hear her crying in the bathroom.

06-29-18_11-08-07 PM.pngHe wiped the hot tears from his face, then he got up and knocked on the bathroom door.  “Laney, please come out. I’m not going anywhere..”

“Why did you do it? Why did you make me love you?”

“Open the door…”

06-29-18_11-28-34 PM.pngFinally the door cracked open and he backed up. Laney walked out of the bathroom and slapped Cole hard across the face.

Then she started beating at his chest with her fists.

06-29-18_11-27-07 PM.png“Owwww,” said Cole and grabbed her wrists. “Laney, stop it. Talk to me.”

“About what? My broken heart?” she cried still trying to hit him.

06-29-18_11-12-48 PM.png“Shhh, stop!” said Cole holding her wrists tight.

When Laney ran out of steam and could no longer fight him, she finally stopped resisting and fell into Cole’s arms crying. “I hate you,” she said into his chest.

06-29-18_11-37-42 PM.pngCole felt like he was going to be sick. He held Laney, rubbing her back until her breathing was back to normal. “Come on. Let’s sit down and talk. Please.”

“What’s there left to talk about? You’ve made up your mind. You don’t want me.”

“Laney…no. That’s not true,” he said and led her to the couch.

06-29-18_11-45-28 PM.png“Then what is it? You don’t trust me. You think I’ll just hook up with someone else just because we are apart? Either way, it doesn’t matter. You will obviously never trust me again. One stupid mistake and I ruined everything. I tried to make up for that.”

06-29-18_11-46-46 PM.png“Laney. Look at me,” said Cole holding her still so she wouldn’t move. “I love you. This has nothing to do with Ryker. Our lives just suddenly went in opposite directions. In your heart, you know it too.”

“I am going to miss you,” she whispered.

“I am going to miss you too.”

“Can I call you?”

Cole breathed a little easier. “You better.”

06-30-18_12-05-27 AM.pngLaney relaxed and laid her head on his chest. He stroked her hair, calming them both. She felt so right in his arms.

“Cole?”

“Hmm?”

“I don’t hate you….much,” she said into his chest.

Cole chuffed out a small laugh. “I know. You okay now?”

06-29-18_11-58-10 PM.png“I guess. No – not really.”

“I know. Me either. But, I need to get you home. You have to rest. You have a big day tomorrow. The first day of the rest of your life.”

“Kiss me, one more time, please.”

06-30-18_12-13-20 AMTears came again. Cole kissed her as tenderly as he could, their salty tears mixing together. He leaned his forehead on hers. “You ready to go?” he whispered.

She just nodded.

  1. Okay as much as I am a Connie shipper…

    😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

That was so sad! I understand why Cole feels the way he does. It makes sense that he’d want to break up so that they can’t hold each other back from their dreams.

But dang, this kid likes to pick the worst possible moments to have conversations. Poor Laney! He should have had this talk with her earlier… and definitely not right after they’d had sex.

But he’s still young so I’ll give him a pass for his poor timing 😛 😉

Laney is a nice girl. I hope she finds happiness in her life and career ❤️

  2. As Citizen said, what a horrible time to drop that bomb! I can understand why the poor girl freaked out. Still, I think he’s right and they’ll be better off apart, at least for the time being. OK, on with the rest of Cole’s life!

    • Next…..lol…..I think I would have freaked out too… of course they would want to have sex right before she leaves, but then to say goodbye forever. Not cool.

  3. Cole is right they need to go their separate ways if it is meet for them to be together in the future they will find away back to each other. They both hurting now. Time will make the hurt less painful.
Such a sad story and told so beautifully. Cole is mature beyond his years and some of it seems to be rubbing off on Laney. I actually felt sorry for Laney.😱 That’s a first.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words. You made my day. Cole is mature beyond his years in some ways but so focused on the ideal life he wants for himself that he doesn’t want to compromise. But he probably did do the right thing, maybe not in the best way though. He hurt Laney pretty bad, but he didn’t mean to. I guess he thought making love before you tell someone you are cutting them lose would make it easier….. idk. 🤷‍♀️

  4. This was so beautiful and so heartbreaking!! 😭😭😭💔
I totally shipped Cole and Dannie all this time but now I’m not so sure..! Maybe they’ll find their way to each other in the end? *crosses fingers*
But the realist in me thinks Cole made the right decision. Fortunately Laney understood this. But it’s because of this too that this chapter was so sad! 😢
I hope they’ll both be okay. And despite all the sadness, I’m so excited to follow Cole’s journey through life! ❤

    • Thank you. It was both sweet and beautiful and then ouch…
I do think she understands on some level but it still hurts. I’m sure she just assumed they would talk on the phone and it would be all good. He sees his parents as how he wants his life to be and can’t figure out how to make it work. Maybe he is looking too far into the future without giving it a chance though. Idk…. Anything could happen in four years. However, I think maybe in the back of his mind, he remembers Ryker, even though he said it wasn’t the reason, it probably pushed him to that decision. Out of sight out of mind….. 😢

    • Ohhh…I didn’t mean to make you cry, although, I admit, I got a little teary-eyed too. 😢 But I always do – I’m so emotionally invested in all of my characters.

Laney was only focused on her immediate future and rightly so. Everything happened so fast and it’s her dream come true. Until the talent scout showed up, Cole was prepared to ask her to come to Brindleton Bay with him to study. He’s always thinking about his longer term goals. Laney was too, but is not as far sighted as Cole. Most young people aren’t.

  5. First off. NSFW pictures? Not again, Audrey.
    Lmao, I’m just kidding.
Wow, Cole with a beard and Ami looking as if she’s his age when she’s only thirteen. She has a very grown-up look.
Cole definitely has a much more mature and realistic approach than Lainey. She wanted them to be together so desperately, but then it all seemed to be falling apart. As sad as it sounds, maybe they’re just not meant to have these blue-eyed babies together…

    Liked by 2 people

    • What, no NSFW pictures for, you! Lol….I had to…it was a huge part of this chapter…..

I was so excited to age everyone up! Cole! With a little stubble and not such a baby face. 😍 I wish this game had a pre-teen stage. Ami does look grown up even though I tried to make her look younger.

Cole is more realistic in his expectations. Long distance for years with no end in sight doesn’t allow a relationship to blossom. And I know! I felt sorry for Laney. No blue-eyed babies. 😢 She would be one of those pregnant women that looks like a pumpkin on stilts she’s so tiny. Guess we won’t find out….

      Liked by 1 person

  6. Hmm…I guess Laneys expectations were so different from Cole’s. I don’t blame Cole. My hubby and I parted very similarly. We knew a long distance relationship wouldn’t work and we said our bittersweet goodbyes. I couldn’t imagine being this emotional and blaming him for being a realist. If you’re meant to be, things will change to be together. I’ve never liked Laney and I still don’t. She’s a diva—perfect as his eventual wife. 😈

    Liked by 4 people

    • That’s such a sad story Pammie! 😢

I don’t think she really thought they wouldn’t stay together or thought it through at all until Cole forced it. She really didn’t have that much time to think of anything except getting ready to leave.

Laney is definitely a bit of a diva. When things don’t go her way we have seen how she reacts. Maybe they will find their way back together. Or maybe not… 😈

      • Lol! I just figured out you thought we divorced. That was when we were dating. We found our way back to each other and got married! Happy ending!!!! 😍😍😍

  7. For all that Cole seems to be thinking some pretty mature stuff there, he suuuuure does still have the general dumbassery of a young guy, omg!
You do NOT bang a girl and then dump her out of the blue, Cole, what?!

Laney, tho, with the hitting; emotional turmoil is no excuse for physical abuse, honey (even when he pulled some crap like a bang and dump ok)…use your words, not your fists!

I’m thrilled we’re at the YA arc now! I have an inkling stuff is about to get TURNT 😈

    Liked by 5 people

    • Cole is still young and inexperienced even though he tries to think about the long term goals for his life. Most kids wouldn’t even consider that and would eventually wind up with someone else and do a long distance break up.

Laney was pissed and out of control. We see how she reacts when things don’t go her way. Kisses another guy, hits Cole…certainly she strikes back in ways meant to hurt. 🙄

And yesssss….out of the teen arc!

  9. Man this was the most Uptown chapter so far…because you had the view. 😛 (Can’t ever get tired of it!) Not just people bumping uglies and crying too.

Ugh I knew it would come to this. But does that mean that Avery the college cougar is fair game? I’ll take a sacrifice for her.

    Liked by 3 people

    • Eeeekkkkk. Maybe I need to keep away from Uptown! Lol….. The views are amazing though. It never gets old.

Avery the cougar could be on the horizon . . . He’s a free man now. And no longer a kid. Just saying….

  10. I would like to tell you my parent’s solution to the long distance relationship. it was the time of the Korean conflict. There was no internet. Many young men were drafted. My dad opted to volunteer for the navy. but he had to sign up for 4 years. My mom chose to get married and have me. We lived in Navy housing while my dad went overseas patrolling Korean waters…My mom and her best friend took sexy pictures aka Daisy Duke and send it to my dad so he had pinup pictures on his bunk wall like the other guys. During his leaves were the only times we were together those 4 years few and far between. I am thankful his dad, my grandpa, was a father figure for me. Mom had to work while I was babysat by relatives like my retired grandpa and great grandma.
Cole’s timing is very very bad to break up. You should not break up after sex, the emotions and hormones are high. Think of it as a woman giving birth, hormones are high and they say/do things they don’t mean…I think it would have been better to gently tell Laney I think you should be free to date others. If our love was meant to be it would survive all the ups and downs of the careers. But if it is not, then that is ok. Friends forever.
However it was good he got it out in the open. What he was looking for in a relationship.
Thank you for a moving, emotional, rollercoaster of a chapter fully developing our flawed characters of Cole and Laney.

    Liked by 4 people

    • That’s such a sweet story about your parents and how they dealt with being apart. Thank you for sharing.

And yes, Cole’s timing was absolutely horrible. The conversation should have been had under less emotional circumstances for sure. But even though he was probably right, he’s still very young and doesn’t always make the best emotional decisions.

  11. Okay, han, I’m not so sure if after you have sex with someone is the best time to say ”good bye forever”, but, you do you…I’m glad Cole was able to see that this whole ”long distance”’ relationship wasn’t going to work.It really spared both of them of a lot of pain they would feel in the future. I hope they keep in touch, but, for some reason, I still want them to only be firends, while Cole finds another person to marry…Maybe another vet, or that older girl he met?( I forgot her name, the one with short, dark hair, that appeard in his dad’s office.)Excited to see Brindlenton Bay, I like that city!

    Liked by 2 people

    • Not the time at all…he really needs to work on his delivery of bad news…. In the long run, however, it is likely the right thing to have done. And you never liked them together. Interesting. A lot do – a lot don’t. The older girl, Avery is someone a lot are curious about. Brindleton Bay is so pretty. ❤

  12. I really liked this. As much as I want for them to have their happy end, it would be too soon if it happened now. This is more like… life. Sometimes things just don’t work out no matter how much you both try. There are elements beyond your control. Cole was very mature about it, I have to hand it to him. I’ll keep hoping for their path to cross again, if they’re meant to be, this is a story after all. You can make it happen. 🙂
And now I’m getting to share my vision of Ami & Noah ship… He’ll keep working for Cole’s dad, right? So… Ami might come by to say hi to Ben and maybe she gets a nice glimpse of shirtless suntanned Noah working? Who could resist that??? 😀

    Liked by 2 people

    • Ami and Noah! Perhaps – I know a shirtless suntanned Noah…gah…I would be all over that…. 🙂 Yes, Noah is going to stay in Willow Creek working for Ben.

As for Laney and Cole – it was very much like real life. Things happen that take you in opposite directions. But four years from now after college, who knows. Either she is a principal dancer or maybe she gets injured. Any number of things can happen in four years. Hmmm. Make it happen… let me think about it…. thinking…. but I’ll never tell! 🙂

  13. This was a sad chapter, I get it though, I have tried the long distance thing, multiple times, it doesn’t work. Personally I am still shipping for Nicky, but I couldn’t help but feel for Laney. All that time wasted on the prom incident, shame, then again if that wouldn’t happened he wouldn’t have become close to Dannie, or maybe never have made up with Nicky and my ship would have been sunk forever. Like a ripple in a pond I suppose.

    Liked by 1 person

    • NIcky blew it with her lies. She was NOT honest with herself or Cole. She should have been upfront with him. IE no sex until marriage, and put down rules or limits. If she had done that Cole would never have rebounded to Laney who was waiting her chance. I think they would have cooled their relationship but dated other people but always be there fore each other. and eventually over time realize they are the one for each other. LIes cause trust issues. Lack of trust always ruins a relationship. That’s my take on this. Laney almost doomed her relationship with Cole over lack of trust. There are still some viewers that say cheater, cheater. It takes commitment to make a long distance relationship work. Commitment like marriage. How many war babies were born to young men shipped off to war drafted and otherwise? That is a real long distance in ages problem not knowing one day or the next if they are still alife…..

      • I got ya, but you also have to remember these are kids, more or less, at least compared to me, it’s all a learning process, I ship Nicky cause she reminds me of a girl I was once loved. I think I could end up shipping Dannie because she is the type of girl I would like to be with now, mature and more outgoing and laid back.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yes, Nicky blew it and Laney almost did due to trust issues. Trust is a hard thing to give someone. I think Cole has learned some lessons during his teen years about honesty and trust. Good and bad that will follow him through his Adult life. And yes…. all the war babies! Long distance is hard for all involved. 😦

    • Well… Nicky and Cole may well get another chance. She is going to the same University as him. So they will still see each other and likely seek each out, especially in the beginning before they begin to make new friends… 🙂 Long distance can be painful. Especially if you have no definitive ‘end’ time.

  14. Awww such a heart wrenching episode. While Cole didn’t go about it the right way (timing dude), I can see how much it hurts him to be realistic about the situation. Laney is too emotional to see it, but I think Cole is right…long distance won’t work. It never does. Does this mean Nicky has a shot again???? LOL

    • It was hard. His timing for delivery has always been really bad. It was sad because they really were doing well together. 😢💔

Hmmm.. we will see what Nicky is up to in the next chapter….😉…. Is she wanting to try and rekindle a romance with Cole or has she found someone new and he lost out…they are going to the same University….

  17. As much as I rest my case on how much I still despise Laney, that still was a beautiful chapter. I liked the romance it portrayed. I guess I can support that Cole needed closure with her. She is a beautiful girl. But I still don’t want them to last forever.

In the end, I’m hoping he ends up with either Dannie or Nicky. Those are my top 2 favorite girls. 🙂

    • He needed to let her go. It was a bad relationship. She broke his heart and yet he tried again. This time he did it to,her. But it was inevitable they would eventually break up. Dannie or Nicky are two great choices and would both be good with Cole’s personality.

      • Heh heh, I was going to say, after great sex., Cole sure drove a knife in her heart! 😯😵 Ooooh the timing. That’s not Afterglow that’s “after-dim”. (Ok sorry, I’m cheesy 😂 ) Well, they are both very young so I can see how this happened.

  18. Well… He deserved that hit, I guess.
I don’t see Cole having the wrong intention like Ben did, he just executes it the wrong way. Like, no wonder Laney is terribly upset and disappointed after all that. She had to feel like he was using her and that was kind of a “reward” for being with him. It was the right intention to make their last days special but Cole was just. SO bad. At showing her that 😂

    😩💔😩💔😩💔😩💔😩💔😩💔😩💔😩

Oh, this was so hellishly soul-wrenching. I can understand why Cole feels the way he does, and really, there wasn’t a choice. I think if they tried to drag things along, it would’ve brought on more pain, especially if one or both found someone else more suited to their respective lifestyles. It’s hard to grow up and have to make such heartbreaking choices. It’s best for them to try to remain friends though rather than hurt each other down the line. I really ended up liking Laney and wish her all the luck and happiness in the world for her life and career. She deserves to go far.
