Chapter 2.53 – The Proposal

09-18-18_7-46-13 PM.pngYasmine and Ami had become fast friends – again.  Even Cole’s parents had been enamored by his girlfriend. But it was late and they needed to leave. They were both pretty jet-lagged and emotionally drained.

He pulled his mom to the side to talk privately.  “Hey, listen, I will sleep on the couch and Yasmine can have the guest room. I don’t want her to have to get a hotel.”

She looked at him for a minute chewing her bottom lip and Cole got nervous. Finally she spoke. “Cole, I am going to make an assumption that since you two are together, and Yasmine came all this way to be here with you, that you have slept in the same bed more than once. You guys can stay together in the guest room.”

Cole felt the heat run up his neck to his ears and face. “What about Ami?”

“She’s 16. She knows about Tiramisu – thanks to you. And by the way,” she said with an evil grin, “Dad told me you know about the security cameras.”

Cole wanted the ground to swallow him up. “Damn. He said he wouldn’t tell.”

“Haven’t you heard? Paybacks are hell,” said his mother, and laughed quietly. “Seriously, why don’t you two go ahead and get settled in. I will let Dad know. Maybe you can take Ami with you guys.  She’s been stuck up here with me for two days.”

“Mom, what about you?” asked Cole.

She shook her head. “Not leaving as long as Dad is here. If you take Ami, they will let me go in and sit with him and Kaitlin. You guys go on.”

*********************************************************************************

“Yasmine…come see my room. I have a signed poster of James Sanderson from the Heartthrobs!  Can you believe it? Aubrie and I went to their concert when they were in San Myshuno and hid out by the back door! James is so dreamy, but nobody talks about Nathan. He’s secretly my favorite, even though James DID sign my poster!”

Sixteen year-olds and boy bands, thought Cole, rolling his eyes. “Go ahead,” he said, “I’ll unpack us.”

09-18-18_8-19-08 PM.pngThey walked into Ami’s room. “See!  It’s even life size!” squealed Ami.

“Nice. You are lucky. He doesn’t sign much. It might be worth something someday,” suggested Yasmine.

“Oh, you think? Cool!” replied Ami. “Hey, are you gonna sleep in my room?”

“No. I’m going to stay with your brother. Is that okay?” she asked.

Ami blushed. “Yes. Did mom say okay?”

“We have her permission,” said Yasmine gently.

“Mom would never let …..” said Ami frowning.

Yasmine smiled sympathetically. “You are 16 sweetie. And I know, trust me, that 16 feels grown up.  But Cole and I are 22,” explained Yasmine, “Bad things can happen if you are too young to deal with the responsibility of being with a boy. You want to be very careful so you don’t find yourself in trouble. Keep yourself safe Ami.”

Yasmine noticed the ballet posters on Ami’s wall and quickly changed the subject. “Ohhh. I love your ballerina wall!  Those are amazing.”

“Oh yeah! Laney got those for me …. um … she’s now a prima ballerina and,” stuttered Ami uncomfortably.

Yasmine laughed politely, “It’s okay Ami. I know who Laney is.  She is indeed a very talented Ballerina. She is beautiful too.  And those prints are awesome. Listen, I’m really tired. It was a long trip and tomorrow will be an early day.”

“I know. You want to go be with Cole. He’s really a good brother. I miss him. But don’t tell him I said that.”

09-18-18_8-45-47 PM.png“He is a good brother. And I know for a fact that he misses you too. Night sweetie.”

*********************************************************************************

09-18-18_9-27-43 PM.pngCole quickly shut down the computer when Yasmine walked in.  He looked up at her and smiled.  Poor thing, she looked exhausted.  He was too, but not so tired that he didn’t have enough energy left to buy a diamond engagement ring for her.  He had just hit send to have it shipped to Brindleton Bay when the door opened.  “I was just getting ready to go rescue you,” he said.

09-18-18_9-34-14 PM.pngYasmine flopped down on the bed. “You didn’t need to. Ami’s sweet. But she’s a typical 16 year-old.  She thinks she’s a woman, and technically, she is. And a very pretty one at that. But still not quite there yet, you know. She wants to be grown up so bad, but still has a little of that child like innocence about her. And I’m pretty sure she worships you.”

09-18-18_9-37-11 PM.png“Worship huh? Well, she’s a handful – especially when her and Aubrie get together,” agreed Cole. “Come on. Let’s get to bed. I am exhausted and I know you are too.”

“I’m really sorry about your grandfather. Your family is really taking it hard. You’re all so close.”

“Yes, I guess,” he said as they climbed into his bed together.

09-18-18_9-43-04 PM.pngCole turned out the lights and drew Yasmine into his arms, then kissed the top of her head. “Thank you for coming with me,” he whispered as he slowly stroked her hair, “I know you didn’t really want to. But having you here means everything to me. It truly makes it easier. I love you. Don’t forget that.” He was pretty sure she was already asleep before he finished what he was saying.

*********************************************************************************

09-19-18_8-41-43 PMLeroy’s surgery went smoothly and he was scheduled to be released from the hospital in a few days.  The atmosphere had gone from foreboding to party like, especially once Leroy was able to get out of bed and sit in the chair – in his own pajamas. Everyone was smiling and telling jokes instead of being somber and reflective.

09-19-18_8-52-30 PM.pngAfter it was clear Leroy was going to be okay, Cole brought his Dad into the waiting room and told him about his plans to propose to Yasmine.

09-19-18_8-58-20 PM.pngBen got sentimental and told Cole the story of his three proposals to his mother and had him laughing.

09-19-18_8-56-48 PM.png“Do it right the first time,” said Ben. “It’s much easier that way. I like Yasmine. I hope she makes you as happy as your mother has made me. You know, I am very lucky that I had not one, but two amazing women come into my life. Otherwise, I don’t even want to think about where I might be today.”

09-19-18_9-03-39 PM.pngCole was curious about what he meant by that. Maybe his grandfather was right. One day, he and his dad were going to have a long talk. He wanted to ask him about his childhood and his first mother. All he really knew was that he grew up in Twinbrook. But right now, he was ready to collect Yasmine and get back to Brindleton Bay. And propose.

*********************************************************************************

The flight home was so much fun. Now that he had a clearer plan for his future, and his grandfather was doing well, the stress had been lifted.

They had a couple of drinks and talked about Ami’s obsession with the boy band, laughing about the posters on her wall.  Then she admitted she had done exactly the same thing and would lay in bed at night and dream of kissing her favorite band member. Cole loved hearing about some of her happier times as a young girl.

Yasmine also asked Cole, more than once, about Avery.  She wanted to know why they were such good friends.

Maybe she was jealous,  That made him sad and happy at the same time.  Or maybe it was because Yasmine didn’t really have real friends, and even though Avery had pissed him off, he still considered her a good friend. He knew she was just concerned about him getting hurt. She had said as much.

******************************************************************************

09-19-18_10-04-08 PM.pngSince they still had another two weeks before their final semester of classes began, Cole decided to do what Blake had suggested and rent a hotel room in the city for the weekend.  He went online and booked a room and made a reservation at a nearby restaurant.

09-19-18_9-29-08 PM.pngWith his plan in mind, he gave Yasmine her gift. “Merry Christmas, Love,” he said.

“You got me a present?”

“Well, it will benefit both of us. Open it.”

09-19-18_9-38-30 PM.png“Now I’m scared,” she said and proceeded to unwrap the gift.

“Is this for real? And it’s for THIS weekend?” she asked. “God, I hope Blake doesn’t have plans.”

09-19-18_9-45-44 PM.pngCole almost choked. “Ummm…it was supposed to be for us ….”

09-19-18_9-57-52 PM.pngYasmine busted out laughing. “You sweet, sweet man. The look on your face was priceless. Of course I know it’s for us. I love it! And I can’t wait.” She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him making a big ‘mwhaaa’ sound at the end.

*********************************************************************************

09-19-18_10-56-29 PM.pngThe hotel was awesome. As soon as they got to the room, Yasmine pulled Cole down onto the bed with her.  Cole had never seen Yasmine so full of life and happy.  She was relaxed and having a good time. It thrilled him to see her smiling so much. Maybe meeting his family, and the acceptance they gave her, helped her understand him a little better.

09-19-18_11-17-55 PM.pngHe hoped so, because he had never been so nervous as he was that night.  The restaurant was perfect, and as they sat there, he couldn’t help but watch her. She looked especially beautiful tonight. Breathtaking even. And he wanted to always remember this day.

09-19-18_11-16-50 PMShe caught him looking at her and smiled. “Cole, you’ve been so good to me. I totally don’t deserve this. But it’s fabulous. Thank you.”

“Of course you do. You charmed my parents. And Ami thinks you hung the moon and the stars.”

“Ami’s adorable and very pretty. In fact your whole family is attractive. Your parents are so young still.”

“Yes. Dad was only 20 when I was born, so he’s just 42 now.”

“Well, there is a lot of love in your family and it shows. That’s probably why you are so sweet and trusting,” said Yasmine.

09-19-18_11-33-55 PM.png“I’m glad you liked them I’m sorry you had to meet under those circumstances. But, you going with me, it meant the world. If anything had happened…”

“Well, it didn’t. And, you looked so lost. I had to go….So, girlfriend huh?” she said with smile.

Cole suddenly got serious. “Yasmine. You know that I love you. And well, we’ll graduate in just a few months.  After last week, I know I need you in my life.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the little box.

09-19-18_11-26-52 PM.pngYasmine’s face fell.  “Cole…no…”

09-19-18_11-34-50 PM.png“Yasmine….please, let me finish. I know you aren’t ready to be married. Not yet. And that’s okay. But when you are, I want to be the one.” He looked at her with as much love as he could muster before continuing. “Take this ring Yasmine, and promise me, that when the time comes, and you are ready, that you’ll marry me. That you will, one day, be my wife.”

Yasmine shook her head slowly. “Cole….I do want to.  But….I don’t think I can. These last few days with you have been amazing. And your family…”

“Yasmine,” he said to stop her excuses. “Do you love me?” he asked pointedly.

09-19-18_11-43-31 PMShe couldn’t meet his eyes for a minute and Cole’s heart sank.  Finally she looked up. “Cole, that’s just it. I don’t know if I know what love is. Or what it means even. I thought I did. What I do know, is that I want to be with you,” she paused and huffed out a small laugh, “and I have this irrational fear of being separated from you. If that’s love, then perhaps, yes Cole, I do love you.”

09-19-18_11-53-24 PM.pngCole was extremely relieved and let out the breath he hadn’t known he was holding. He was so afraid she was going to say no. “Then Yasmine baby, nothing else matters. I know in my heart that I love you. I need you, and you need me. So, here, take this ring as a promise to marry me – when you are ready. I’ll be ready when you are, whether it’s tomorrow or 6 years from now…” he paused and smiled. “Although I hope it’s not THAT long. But as long as I know you’re committed to me, that’s all that really matters.”

“I’m afraid….” she said miserably.

“Why?” he asked before he could stop the word from coming out.

09-19-18_11-57-03 PM.png“I’m afraid, that one day, you’ll hate me.”

Cole wasn’t about to accept that.  “I could never hate you. How could that even be possible? I’ve already told you, I don’t care what happened before. It’s now that matters. Now and the future. Our future.”

She looked at him, and he could see nothing less than love reflected back to him in her eyes.  “You are offering me the fairy tale Cole. That’s not fair.”

09-20-18_8-43-45 PM.pngCole felt himself relax as a smile played on his lips. She was going to say yes. He could tell.  “Well,” he said letting the smile emerge, “I’m a Vet, not a Knight. So not sure how that one ends. But I’m offering you a ‘happy ever after’ with this soon to be unemployed Vet.”

09-20-18_8-44-58 PM.pngYasmine smiled and bit her lip, her eyes sparkling now. “Can I see the ring?” she asked, still a little uncertain.

The smile that lit up Cole’s face almost hurt it was so big. He pushed the box to her. “If you don’t like it,” he muttered, “we can exchange it.”

09-20-18_8-55-04 PMShe opened the box and gasped as tears began to run down her face. “You were super serious. This ring is amazing. How?”

“I’m attending school on a full scholarship. I’ve worked for Doc Lewis practically my whole life, saving for college. Obviously, I didn’t need it. So I have a little nest egg.”

When she didn’t say anything, he asked once more. “Will you wear it?”

09-20-18_8-55-43 PM.pngShe finally looked up at him and the look on her face said it all. “You make me feel like Cinderella and you are my Prince Charming. And instead of putting on my glass slipper,  it’s this amazing ring – and that when you slip it on my finger, I will somehow turn into a beautiful princess.”

09-20-18_9-08-33 PM.png“Yasmine, you already are a beautiful princess. This ring will just make you my beautiful princess.”

09-20-18_10-22-55 PMCole got up and walked around to her chair. He knelt down on one knee and took her hand in his and kissed it, “Princess Yasmine, will you marry me?” he asked softly.

09-20-18_10-19-56 PM.pngShe laughed softly through her tears when he called her Princess. “Yes, I will my handsome Vet,” she said softly and held her hand out for the ring as tears rained down her pretty face.

Cole’s heart was pounding, and he could barely see for the tears swimming in his own eyes. When he finally managed to slip the ring on Yasmine’s finger, he pulled her from the chair.

Kiss.pngHe kissed her, whispering “I love you,” as their lips met.  Suddenly there was cheering and clapping from the other patrons in the restaurant. He had been so focused on Yasmine, that he had completely forgotten they were sitting in the middle of a crowded restaurant. But he didn’t care. She said yes.

    • Yes! ❤️ Cole is so happy. And I think it probably actually accomplished a little of what he wanted. Maybe it will help Yasmine feel she is worth being loved and eventually open up. That would solidify their relationship because until she does, no matter how much they profess their love, it will always be a problem between them.

    • Yes… it was sweet. ❤️ But I wouldn’t have expected anything less from Cole. He’s such a romantic at heart. Let’s all cross our fingers this will make her secure enough in her relationship with him to tell him.

    • Yes happy tears! It’s nice to see her cry happy tears for a change. She is definitely clinging to Cole. He doesn’t judge her. Hopefully this does what he hoped and she will feel better about opening up to him. ❤️

  1. I have so many mixed feelings about this 😂

The proposal was so sweet and romantic (and I loved the Princess thing, adorable!) But I also feel like he basically talked her into it… and that doesn’t seem like it will bode well for the future 😬 But I am hoping I’m wrong because Cole deserves happiness (and so does Yasmine, but she also needs some serious help with her issues 😭) For now I will cautiously feel happy for him…. but continue to worry 😂

(Also, I loved seeing the James/Heartthrobs referenced here… good taste, Ami 😛 )

    • Ahhh. Yes. He did have to convince her she wouldn’t be required to set a date didn’t he? She wanted to say yes, but it did scare her and he managed to talk her down. So romantic though. ❤️.

You are right, the ring doesn’t automatically make things okay. But a good first step.

  2. This was so lovely. Cole really is charming and I’m so glad she said yes! Hopefully, she will open up to him and tell him about her past. I think now that things are so serious between them, she won’t actually want to go through with a wedding until she’s leveled with him. That’s just what I was thinking, anyway. She needs to bite the bullet and tell him regardless of what she thinks his reaction will be.

    • Cole is a charmer for sure. He also hopes she will open up! And you are right. I don’t think she will go through with a wedding until she’s in a better place. We will see her thoughts about that in an upcoming chapter.

  3. Awww…I thought she’d say no!

But I’m still so afraid. Will they say “I do” at the altar? Will they even make it that far? Ahhh! 😱😱😱 (I hope so! They’d have GORGEOUS babies! ❤️❤️❤️)

Laney and Avery were brought up. Still can’t understand his connection with Avery.

And….JAMES! So fun to hear about Ami’s fun time actually getting James’ autograph! Must have caught him in a weak moment. (Or maybe he’s softened after he met Lexie.) And I agree…Nathan is dreamy (even if he’s a little on the strange side.)

Here’s to a beautiful wedding! (You said there was going to be lots of drama coming so that’s why I’m nervous!) 😬

    Liked by 2 people

    • They would make pretty babies! I hope they make it to the alter. If it were up to Cole he would get married now. But he knows he had to wait on her.

James was softer after meeting Lexie I guess. Nathan is VERY strange, but easy on the eyes. 😍. Guess I’m partial. Haha.

Hopefully a beautiful wedding is on their future.

  5. I hope they have their happy everafter. I like the way Yasmine gets along with his family. I love the talk she had with Ami about not doing something she would regret. She needed that from someone close to her age that was not a parent. It kind of sounds like to me that Ami is thinking about a sexual relationship. Speaking from almost 16 year old point of view she is not ready for the consequences. I know I am definitely not.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Ami could be thinking about becoming sexually active. But she is definitely not ready and I’m glad Yasmine had that little impromptu talk with her. Much better received coming from a peer than her parents.

Yasmine is much more open with Cole and shows him more of her vulnerability. She studies and reads people well and is able to put them at ease rather easily. Maybe it is an art she learned growing up like she did to be able to get along. Or maybe just an innate talent. But regardless, most people like her, well, except Avery, because of what Cole had told her.

      Liked by 1 person

  6. I did not see that one coming. I for sure thought that she was going to say no, and run away like she had always done in the past. But this time Yasmine totally surprised me. Congrats to both of them (and hopefully not to a long engagement).
And I do hope that one day Ben will sit down with Cole and tell him everything about his past.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Ben is long overdue to,have that discussion with Cole. But maybe he didn’t think he was mature enough to handle it. So hopefully one day soon.

And Yasmine has surprised everyone, but Cole is, as she put it before, a good negotiator and he totally negotiated his way into a yes and I don’t think she had a clue. It was so romantic, how could anyone say no? I hope they do get married sooner rather than later. I fear the longer they wait, the harder it will be for her to actually go through with it.

      Liked by 1 person

  7. That went surprisingly well. Maybe because no litle toddlers happened to waddle around nearby to remind Yasmine of her darkest secret. Disaster is postponed then. I’m curious if and when her past will catch up on her. She should tell Cole everything now, that she accepted the ring.

  9. Another great Chapter. Yas does need to open up about her daughter. I also sense Yas is going to be one of those overly jealous girlfriends/Fiancee’s. For now I am just happy she said yes to Cole’s Proposal.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Thanks! Yep. It’s time for her to face the music. Next chapter we will hear from her POV again. And she is overly jealous now that they are truly committed. Maybe because she still thinks she isn’t worthy of Cole’s affection? If she opens up, hopefully that will change. I would expect he would encourage her to seek help if she does, but that’s the question.

  10. This was all very sweet, but, I wonder how long will it last. Yasmine *still* has all this insecurity inside her, and years and years of fear won’t dissapear within a few days. I hope that, now, that she is going to, maybe, marry Cole, she decides to tell him all about her daughter.

I mean, this isn’t some randon boyfriend or friends-with-benefits type of guy, is the one she is playing to marry. Thought I * can* see where she is coming from, she thought she loved a guy that after a while dumped her, pregnant, and is wondering if Cole will be the same.

    Liked by 1 person

    • Yes… Cole is definitely not a FWB type of guy. And yes, she thought she was in love once and got seriously burned. So….you are right to wonder how long it will last. Her fears aren’t going to go away because she said yes. Only when she finally opens up and maybe seeks out professional help will she be able to really be able to love herself and love Cole fully without fear. Poor thing…

  11. Ooooh boy… I was so sure she would say no! I can’t believe she accepted actually!
Although I’m sure this is the beginning of many more problems now. She said yes, but she’s not quite ready to let him completely into her life yet… I’m just gonna wait for the downfall now lol!
Oh, and they both looked gooorgeous btw! ❤
    Very nice chapter! ❤ ❤

    • Cole cleans up good. lol…. but thank you! I think she surprised herself by saying yes. But he sorta talked her into it…so you are right she’s not really fully ready. But instead of making worse, hopefully it will make her trust him more? Maybe.

  12. I was sure she would say no. I had a lump in my throat all the way through reading. Guess Cole is a little smarter than I gave him credit for – not setting a date was smart. Still, don’t think it’s going to be that easy…

  13. Wow, I’m surprised she actually said yes. I was totally prepared for her storming out of the restaurant, leaving Cole solo at the dinner table. 😰
In my opinion, Cole is taking a huge chance. There’s a lot more to Yasmine than he knows. She is like a beautiful gift wrapped in sparkly wrapping paper with a beautifully tied ribbon on top. However if you open that box, it could be a bomb. She is a complex woman that’s for sure. But she is a sweetheart, and I like her very much. I’m really hoping this works out and they take off.

I’ll say it again, Audrey you are doing a great job with your story. I am totally hooked on it now! 😁😁😁😁😁😁

    • Thanks Cherry for the sweet words. I’m glad you are enjoying it. ❤️ I know….he practically begged her to say yes and negotiated the terms. Lol… she is very complex and there could be a powder keg underneath that gorgeous exterior. I hope it works too. Cole will be devastated if not. 😕.

  14. If I can imagine anything worse than the entire security camera story, it’s your mom knowing about it. Although, there’s no real harm done – she knew about it before after all, now she just knows Cole knows about it, too and that he’s probably embarrassed to death. Not that she didn’t use it to have a nice laugh at his expense 😂
Yasmine thinking she doesn’t deserve all this broke my heart 😭 Is the child her only secret? I wonder if there’s more behind it or if all her trouble is “just” due to constantly being denied the proper love as a kid. She absolutely has a trauma

  15. I want to be happy for them, truly I do, but… 💔😩

There’s just so much wrong here. Cole had to practically beg her to accept the proposal and take the ring. It was like pulling teeth to get her to say yes. I think she got caught up in the moment but later on will be trying to think of a way to get out of it. Cole is so, so happy, but I have a dreadful feeling it’s going to be short-lived. 💔

The proposal itself was so romantic and sweet. ❤️❤️ Cole is such a sweetheart and a charmer. Any woman would be so lucky to have him in her life. He certainly deserves all the happiness in the world. Yasmine deserves happiness, but she needs a major amount of help if she is going to be able to accept any kind of happiness. She really needs to open up to Cole if their relationship has even the merest chance of survival.

    Liked by 1 person

    • He did pretty much beg her. I felt sorry for him and I do think she became caught up in the romance, hopeful even. But she still needs to be honest with him. Cole is on top of the world. When there is no pressure for more, the two of them get along easily, but as soon as he pushes for a commitment, she freaks out. Hopefully things will work out and she’ll finally admit what her problems are about. Or you’re right, they may be doomed.
